Serves as the technical expert in several of the following fields / disciplines: Laboratory Safety, Radiation Safety, Occupational Safety, Environmental Health, General Safety including Fire Life Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Ergonomics, Hazardous Materials, Hazardous Waste, or Environmental Protection. Problems are complex and may require creation of new methodologies by applying professional EH&S knowledge and / or expertise. Serves as the academic unit's technical expert in the development / implementation, dissemination and integration of programs within several fields / disciplines. May represent EH&S regarding the field / discipline at meetings and conferences involving academic compliance committees, campus, system wide, local government, state and federal levels of authority in matters related to fields of expertise. Decision-making is based on established procedures and integration / interpretation of relevant laws, regulations and organizational policy; professional best practices; relevant science methodology, impact on other EH&S programs; and senior management approvals. Decisions may impact other EH&S programs, departments, segments of the organization and / or organization-wide.
This position requires a Bachelor's degree in Environmental Health and Safety or a related field. Eight years of professional experience, the eight years should include at least two years of program development experience and minimum five years' experience working with EH&S and safety programs.
Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training required. A Master's degree in Environmental Health and Safety or a related field may be substituted for two years of the required experience.
Advanced or expert knowledge / understanding of broad range of EH&S fields and familiarity with all EH&S fields- includes: principles and practice of safety management, occupational health and safety, ergonomics, industrial hygiene, biological safety, radiation protection, fire safety, environmental protection, hazardous waste management and emergency management, especially in their application to an academic institution. Advanced or expert knowledge and skill in applying and interpreting applicable local, state, and federal regulations and related standards, guidelines and, as appropriate, recommend organization policy. Working knowledge of the Code of Federal Regulations, Title 40 (Human Health & Environment). Working knowledge of California Titles 8 (Safety), 19 (Fire Prevention) and 24 (Fire Construction). Strong written, verbal and interpersonal communications skills, including advanced political acumen and skill to effectively communicate with diverse constituencies in a highly political environment. The ability to communicate effectively even in difficult circumstances with various audiences. The ability to work cooperatively with University officials and regulatory agencies. Advanced skill to effectively represent the organization to with Campus leadership and academic staff. Advanced analytical and organizational skills to organize, prioritize and manage the successful completion of projects within budget and time constraints. Advanced skill in mentoring or overseeing the work of other EH&S technical and professional staff. Advanced skill to appropriately use technology and relevant scientific equipment as required. Strong Computer and Presentation Skills Database and Online Tools and Report Generation. Experience in responding to emergencies, especially in public relations and risk communication.
Registered Environmental Health Specialist- preferred Certified Industrial Hygienist- preferred Certified Safety Professional - preferred.
Previous experience working in higher education. Laboratory experience. Knowledge of UC policies and procedures.
Special Conditions Required:
Must have a valid CA Driver's License and participate in DMV Pull notice program Must be able to wear PPE. Must be able to work outside of regularly scheduled shift and participate in Emergency Support Team. Must be able to work onsite.
