Financial Aid Counselor - Student Financial Services 17152
The Student Financial Services unit of University Relations/Enrollment Management at West Virginia University is seeking applications for a Financial Aid Counselor position. This position provides financial aid counseling to students, parents and others interested in student financial aid. The Financial Aid Counselor will also assist in the administration of financial aid funds including the awarding of financial aid to eligible students, and work closely with other financial aid staff, related institutional offices and external agencies to ensure efficient and timely delivery of funds for students. This position represents the Financial Aid Office at financial aid and student recruiting events, both on and off campus.
In order to be successful in this position, the ideal candidate will:
Process financial aid awards, identifies and resolves over-award situations, identifies and resolves discrepant information, reviews verification documentation and makes necessary updates, and processes PLUS and Private Loan applications and other financial aid processes to ensure the accurate awarding of aid to students. Work directly with students/parents to immediately identify resolution to issues and/or concerns in relation to processing of financial aid. Communicate clearly about documentation students/parents need to provide, updates BANNER to reflect needed documentation, reviews documentation once received and makes necessary adjustments. Documents situation and any changes/adjustments that are made.
Exercise authority granted by Department of Education through professional judgment to adjust students' costs of attendance and Expected Family Contribution data elements based on information received through special circumstance requests to determine if additional financial aid can be awarded. Confer with appropriate staff to reevaluate financial aid status for families requesting revisions to financial aid packages.
Counsel students, parents, high school personnel and others regarding financial aid programs offered by federal, state, private and institutional sources. This includes counseling students regarding academic progress, student aid budgets, dependency status, withdrawals, debt management and financial responsibility issues. Make recommendations on alternate funding sources for students in need of additional funds. Address general questions on enrollment processes such as admissions, scheduling and payment of invoices.
Assist with administering over $400 million annually in student aid funds. Perform final review of aid applications and awards using integrated computer system. Review, interpret and ensure compliance with over 7000 student aid regulations. Interact on a daily basis with a variety of publics to include federal and state agencies and other University offices.
Continually monitor ever-changing rules, regulations, policy bulletins and statutes from the federal and state government, other agencies and the University. This is accomplished through the reading of various policy manuals, Federal Registers and other sources, attending training sessions and conferences This position requires travel to attend training and conferences and to represent the University at recruitment functions, informational seminars and public relation activities. Perform other financial aid related duties as assigned by supervisor of other financial aid senior staff.

Bachelor's degree in a related field or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
At least one (1) year of experience in each of the following:
Computer experience using programs such as Word, Excel and complex databases.
Experience in administrative work or counseling/advising.
Experience working with large relational database systems such as Banner is preferred.
Experience Working in a student services area providing information on academic policies and/or assisting students, faculty and staff is preferred.
Preference given to applicants with direct work/interaction with students in areas of merit scholarships, financial aid, admissions, student recruitment, student advising, student orientation, or closely related experience.
Must be able to obtain and maintain access to federal database such as, but not limited to, FAA Access and COD
Excellent customer service skills. Must be able to exhibit professionalism at all times
Excellent communication skills both oral and written are required.
Must be able to maintain confidentiality at all times
Ability to understand and follow complex instructions
Must be able to use a personal computer includes programs such as Word and Excel
Must be able to multi-task and work in a fast-paced, team-oriented, student-centered environment
Accuracy and attention to detail are essential
Strong Organizational skills and the ability to establish priorities
Ability to work with and meet deadlines
