The PQA Senior Director of Research directs PQA’s research to develop evidence to support meaningful quality measures; evaluate the impact of PQA measures on care delivery, patient outcomes and healthcare spending; and identify gaps in performance measurement. To support high-quality care, PQA research also studies the value of medications and innovative care delivery models, including pharmacist-provided care, and fosters collaboration to address health equity and improve medication access. The Senior Director of Research leads PQA’s research team in the identification, funding, execution and dissemination of research projects. The Senior Director collaborates with senior PQA staff to ensure that the organization’s research is aligned with PQA’s mission and organizational priorities, responsive to the needs of PQA’s multi-stakeholder membership, and effectively disseminated to members and other relevant health care stakeholders.
Research is a PQA strategic priority and identified area of growth. The Senior Director of Research plays a key role in securing grants and other funding through cultivation of key partnerships that expand PQA’s research portfolio with public and private sector organizations.
Oversee and contribute to quantitative and qualitative research projects, including protocol design and dissemination deliverables (e.g., white papers, project reports, peer-reviewed manuscripts).
Effectively identify, prioritize and communicate PQA’s research agenda, including identifying goals and defining deliverables to staff, external stakeholders, and the broader healthcare community.
Manage and mentor the PQA research teams, including the identification and promotion of professional growth opportunities.
Set team and individual goals and provide routine evaluations of progress toward these goals.
Develop relevant policies and procedures to support team activities.
Ensure adherence to professional standards and ethics of research functions.
Establish, manage and meet budget goals for the research team in collaboration with executive leadership.
Work collaboratively across all PQA teams, to ensure cohesiveness and communication.
Develop and cultivate constructive and strategic relationships with external researchers, PQA members, and other healthcare quality stakeholders.
Collaborate with PQA’s communications staff, to publicly promote the relevance and value of PQA research to diverse healthcare system stakeholders through PQA channels (website, publications, blogs, press releases, webinars, social media, etc.).
Lead the dissemination of high-quality peer reviewed research publications and external dissemination vehicles (presentations, posters, media).
Maintain a broad and current knowledge of issues related to healthcare quality, health policy, and effective medication use and safety, as well as health equity and social determinants of health.
Use PQA business management resources to track project timelines and facilitate effective and appropriate internal communication.
Perform other duties as assigned.
At least five (5) years of demonstrative experience in health services and/or applied research projects and extensive knowledge of various research methods.
Master’s degree in a health-related field.
Management and leadership experience in a supervisory capacity.
Public speaking experience and history of successful delivery of presentations and projects.
Diverse portfolio of successful grants and research funding, including publicly and privately funded agencies, institutions, foundations and organizations.
Strong history of peer-reviewed publications in established journals.
Successful history of research funding procurement from federal, life science, and/or other grant funding bodies.
Strong writing and analytic skills.
Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively as a member of a multi-stakeholder team.
Strong qualitative and quantitative skills with experience in primary and secondary data analysis.
Proficiency in a variety of different technology platforms and solutions including the Microsoft 365 Suite and experience with statistical analysis software (i.e., SAS, R, STATA, etc.).
Experience mentoring research and project management staff.
Doctorate-level degree (PharmD, PhD, DrPH, or equivalent degree in health outcomes research, health services research, or other relevant discipline).
Experience with healthcare quality measurement, health policy, including public and private health insurance coverage, access to care, health services, and healthcare finance.
