Associate Dean for Public Affairs & Communications - (210000PY)
The University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) is seeking an Associate Dean for Public Affairs & Communications as the chief communications officer for the UMSOM. This positon will lead all areas of media relations, web and digital communications, branding, broadcast & visual media, publications, social media, issues and crisis communications, community health information, and reputation management in support of the strategic goals of the UMSOM. The Associate Dean is a member of the Dean's senior management team, counseling the Dean and other senior management on communications, media and public affairs issues and strategic opportunities for the UMSOM, with the goal of enhancing the UMSOM's visibility, reputation, and leadership position at the local, national and international level. The AD is the senior interface for the UMSOM with senior marketing and communications counterparts at the University System of Maryland, (USM), the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB), the University of Maryland Medical System (UMMS) and the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC), and counsels regularly with senior leadership at these institutions on a range of UMSOM-related communications and reputational issues. The position is also the senior public affairs liaison with the UMSOM's Board of Visitors, working directly with the Chair as well as with the BOV Committee on Visibility and Recognition. The Associate Dean is responsible for managing a team of communications professionals who have specific experience and expertise in each of the communication disciplines. The Associate Dean employs a collaborative approach in which the team works together to ensure that these various communications platforms and messages are strategically integrated and leveraged to ultimately impact the UMSOM's key business metrics, including research funding, clinical revenues, fundraising and prospective donors, student acquisition, faculty recruitment, among others.

Work directly with UMSOM Dean on a daily basis on a broad range of internal and external UMSOM communications and public affairs issues, program and activities.
Develop senior-level communications for Dean, including remarks, commentary, statements, reports, op-ed pieces, letters, and messaging for target audiences; Manage and develop all major UMSOM announcements directly with Dean, including senior personnel announcements, leadership transitions, Dean initiatives, new faculty programs, research grant announcements, published faculty studies, clinical innovations and scientific breakthroughs.
Respond and provide counsel anytime regarding deliverables on critical communications, crisis management, and sensitive media issues; serving as interface with UMB Legal and other UMB/ UMMS/UMMC leadership.
Maintain senior-level relationships with key media editors, producers, and reporters, discussing story opportunities, informing them of key newsworthy developments at the UMSOM, managing communications on sensitive issues.
Lead and develop team of professionals, including in areas of Media Relations, Publications, Graphic Design, Web Communications, Social Media, Broadcast Media and Research/ Science Communications; Identify opportunities for growth and professional development; Provide and promote ongoing opportunities for team building and collaboration.
Build and expand critical communications capabilities where needed, secure resources to ensure accomplishment of goals and activities at highest level of quality and professionalism.
Develop Annual Strategic Communications Plan and budget for the UMSOM, with input and collaboration among all areas of the Office of Public Affairs & Communications, including making recommendations for new initiatives to distinguish and communicate the UMSOM's leadership position.
Oversee UMSOM's Branding and Identity Program, including management of the UMSOM's logo and visual identity, as well as the key components of the UMSOM's brand positioning strategy and message differentiation.
Work directly with Dean on management of key rankings and reputational programs to maximize UMSOM leadership position, including serving on an Advisory Council of Medical School Deans to evaluate and recommend changes to U.S. News & World Report.
Establish collaborative model with major UMSOM centers and institutes with co-funding model for public relations directors serving in dual capacities.
Develop specific strategic communications plans for new research and clinical programs, in collaboration with UMMS, UMB, UMMC for major local, national, and international initiatives.
Work directly with department chairs and directors to provide counsel on communications needs and establish portfolio of publications and other marketing assets to promote departments, centers and institutes and administrative units to key internal and external constituents, with goal of generating additional revenue for the Office of Public Affairs & Communications.
Oversee slate of community health information programs, including Mini-Med School, Mini-Med School for Kids, Seniors Medical Institute; Establish plans for continuing growth and expansion of these programs.
Provides overall senior management of UMSOM's web, video, and digital communications activities, mobilizing internal resources and interfacing with Dean on goals and objectives.
Serve as Senior Editor on UMSOM publications, providing editorial direction and management of SOM News, State of the School, Annual Reports, Student Recruitment Publications and other marketing and communications materials.
Work directly with UMSOM's Board of Visitors as senior liaison on communications and public affairs. Serves as the senior UMSOM representative on the BOV Committee on Visibility and Recognition, leading a joint Digital Marketing & Communications campaign with the Office of Development to increase UMSOM's online visibility and attract new potential donors.
Participates as senior UMSOM representative on variety of UMB committees, including campus-wide Communications Council, and joint Senior Marketing Council with UMMC/ UMMS and Editorial Advisory Board of the Medicine Bulletin.
Participates as a senior member of the AAMC's Group on Institutional Advancement, making presentations and serving on committees with colleagues from AAMC member institutions. Participates in DC-Maryland chapter of Public Relations Society of America.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Education: Master's degree in communications, journalism, marketing or other discipline appropriate to position is required.
Experience: Twelve (12) years of senior management experience in marketing and communications, including a minimum of five (5) years specialized experience required. Experience in higher education environment preferred.
Supervisory: Five (5) years of senior management experience that involved in recruitment, training and professional development of staff and directly responsible for the performance of staff.
