This is a 100% time position reporting to the Assistant to the Director of the St. Anthony Falls Laboratory (SAFL). The Communications Manager is responsible for leading SAFL’s internal and external communications. This position is responsible for initiating and managing a wide range of communications activities, including public and media relations, branding and design, strategic marketing and promotion, publications, web and social media and event planning. The Communications Manager will work closely with the SAFL Administrative Team on a variety of strategic initiatives, monitor the research activities of SAFL, and develop publishable content that is timely and interesting to our stakeholders.
Communications and Public relations – 60% â— Lead the effort to seek, solicit and provide content and messaging that engages and captivates audiences via our newsletters, website, social media, and other related publications. â— Responsible for website administration and coordination, enhancement for design and usability, and development and implementation of website content through Content Management System (website programming done by SAFL IT). â— Actively participate within the SAFL community and be knowledgeable of current and upcoming projects/activities and other newsworthy stories. â— Lead internal lab communication to keep Faculty, Staff and Students informed and engaged. â— Create one electronic newsletter per year (SAFL Channel). This includes content development, layout, editing and publication. â— Evaluate the impact of trends in communications and marketing on applicable activities and systems and implement necessary changes to programs. â— Work with unit management and professional staff to plan, direct, and implement short to mid-range communication initiatives, strategic goals, and issue resolution. â— Ensure that the public relations strategy and tactics align with College of Science and Engineering and University mission, goals and standards, as well as industry trends. â— Collaborate with University colleges and departments, the media, and the public when needed. â— Track publications developed by faculty, research staff, and students.
Events and Awards – 25% â— Assist lab leadership and seminar committee in organizing the SAFL seminar series, exhibit coordination for both internal and external audiences including supporting speaker identification and confirmation, arrangements and logistics and promotion. â— Oversee prestigious international award program as well as internal awards program in collaboration with Awards Committees. â— Planning and coordination of special events, conference participation. â— Create marketing/promotional materials and communications for key events.
Outreach -15% â— Lead SAFL’s tour program. This includes serving as the first point of contact for tour requests, scheduling, prioritizing, and training tour guides. â— Facilitate stakeholder interactions for different research projects through arranging meetings and being a point of contact. â— Manage SAFL alumni database.
Required Qualifications â— BA/BS degree in Communications, Journalism, or related field in addition to 2 years of professional, hands-on experience, or 6 years combined equivalent education and experience. â— Strong verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills â— Experience with social media applications and strategy. â— Experience managing web content.
Preferred Qualifications â— Background/experience in the scientific fields of environment, geophysics, or engineering. â— Proven time management skills, the ability to prioritize and meet deadlines. â— Flexibility to work both independently and as part of a team. â— Demonstrated ability to exercise independent judgment and take initiative. â— Event planning experience. â— Experience working with media channels.
