The Communications Manager is a professional responsible for developing strategic communications and messaging in the Office of the Vice President for Research. This position develops and amplifies internal and external communications about research at Brown, reporting to the Vice President for Research (OVPR) and with a dotted line relationship to the Vice President for Communications. The primary responsibility is to elevate Brownâ™s reputation in research through storytelling and implementation of messaging and strategies, working in collaboration with communicators and academic units across the University. Principal channels include an annual research magazine, social media, and Brownâ™s research website. Other responsibilities involve coordinated projects with the Office of University Communications and communicators across Brown, and development of other communications materials about research.
Develop and produce the annual magazine Impact:Research at Brown
Serve as editor-in-chief, project manager, and writer for the high-quality annual magazine about research at Brown in alignment with Brownâ™s strategic objectives. Lead development of the magazine from concept to distribution, including generating ideas, identifying content producers, soliciting and editing articles, finalizing the story lineup, writing articles, working with vendors and agencies to oversee art direction and layout, managing distribution lists, and working with vendors to manage design, publication and dissemination.
Employ strategies for disseminating magazine content to reach a range of audiences, including taking advantage of web, digital and social media opportunities to share content from the print magazine.
Design and manage internal communications, including communications for the Vice President for Research
Collaborating with all divisions of OVPR, lead the development of increasingly effective internal communications about research to essential audiences at Brown: faculty, grant-facing staff, graduate and other students.
Provide the Vice President for Research and other administrative leaders within OVPR (including the Associate Vice President of Research and Executive Director of Brown Technology Innovations) with expert guidance and materials for their use in messaging and disseminating information about research at Brown.
Develop and implement messaging and strategy about research at Brown
Working closely in partnership with the Office of University Communications and lead communicators in schools and research areas across Brown, gain attention for Brown research and elevate its reputation among multiple internal and external audiences. This work involves consultation with campus constituencies, as well as with peers at major research universities around the country.
In coordination with University Communications, handle special reputation elevation projects as assigned.
Employ social media strategies on Twitter and other social media platforms to gain increased attention for Brown research through creating and repurposing content, and using earned media material. Employ strategies for amplifying Brown researchers and scholars, leveraging the potential to support faculty as influencers to share the story of the excellence and impact of Brownâ™s research.
Along with other science and research writers across Brown, contribute to the Brown News Network as an occasional contributor of original research news for the News from Brown central news platform of the University.
Manage research website
Oversee and maintain a robust University research website to convey information about Brownâ™s extensive research enterprise and research accomplishments to all Brown audiences.
Sustain the Research website as an effective mechanism for Brownâ™s internal stakeholders to learn about research opportunities and research awards.
Required: Â Bachelorâ™s degree in journalism, communications, magazine writing, integrated marketing or a similar field (or bachelorâ™s degree with related professional experience).
Preferred: Â Masterâ™s degree
Minimum of 5 years combined professional experience in writing, editing, journalism, communications, or integrated marketing.
Experience developing integrated strategies that span multiple outlets including print, web, and social media.
Demonstrated experience managing social media platforms for reputation elevation.
Experience working effectively and managing projects in a complex environment with overlapping deadlines.
Experience in project management, including guiding project contributors to meet deadlines and goals.
Experience writing about science and research for general public audiences preferred.
Experience in photography and video production helpful.
Experience working in education, research or a non-profit setting, a plus.
Demonstrated excellent written and oral communication skills.
Communications expertise and ability to coordinate among various constituencies and stakeholders.
Proficiency in word processing, including knowledge of Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Photoshop, and familiarity with digital content management systems.
Strong command of Associated Press, MLA and other writing styles.
Attention to detail and strong proofreading skills.
Working understanding of principles of page layout and publication production and design.
Excellent organizational and time-management skills.
The ability to develop and implement long term goals. Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
Initiative, sound judgment, and the ability to solve problems independently and creatively.
Technical expertise and continued interest in maintaining and improving skills
