The University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) is seeking a Chief Nursing Executive to support its missions of health care, academics and research. This position reports directly to the Associate Vice Chancellor for Clinical Affairs. UMMC is located in Jackson, Miss., and serves UMMC’s multiple sites throughout the state.
UMMC is the state’s only academic health sciences center and provides the only Level I Trauma Center, Level IV NICU, children’s hospital and solid organ transplantation services. Position Summary: To provide visionary leadership for the defined standard of nursing excellence and enhance the organizational vision and mission of the University of Mississippi Medical Center’s health system. To develop, recommend, and implement system-wide solutions to meet organizational goals and standards. To provide effective employee communication mechanisms to build relationships and ensure patient satisfaction. To improve quality of care to exceed patient satisfaction. To identify innovative and strategic ways to improve financial performance.
The Chief Nursing Executive (CNE) reports to the Associate Vice Chancellor for Clinical Affairs. Direct reports include: Chief Nursing Officer – Adult Hospital; Chief Nursing and Clinical Services Officer - Children’s of Mississippi; Associate Chief Nursing Officer – Perioperative Services; Executive Director - Advanced Practice Providers; Director - Nursing Quality Development and Professional Practice. Dotted line direct reports include: Assistant Administrator and Chief Nursing Officer – UMMC Holmes County ; Chief Nursing Officer – UMMC Grenada; Nursing Informatics team.
You'll need strong knowledge of business and management principles. Involved in strategic planning, resource allocation, leadership technique and the coordination of people and resources. Knowledge of applicable federal, state and regulatory requirements. Excellent organizational, analytical and problem resolution skills. Exemplary verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate across the nursing spectrum in a complex matrixed organization. Ability to develop and implement nurse recruitment and retention strategies. Ability to build and sustain relationships with executives, physicians, deans of academic schools, senior leaders and employees by engaging others as a visible, collaborative and inspiring leader. Ability to work effectively across organizational and functional boundaries. Works to drive change through the introduction of new ideas and approaches and implement nursing and clinical care strategies across organizations. Supports the interests of UMMC at the system level and works with other UMMC leaders to guide future and continued advancement of the organization and the professional practice of nursing.
Education and Experience: Master's degree in Nursing, Health Care Administration, or related field and ten (10) years of progressive leadership experience in nursing; experience cannot be substituted for educational requirement. Experience in an academic medical center environment strongly preferred, with a track record of excellence with employee engagement.
Certifications, Licenses or Registration Required: Valid RN License. Fellow in the American College of Health Care Executives (FACHE) or Nurse Executive – Advanced Board Certification (NEA-BC) strongly preferred.
