Serve as a Marine Program member responsible for assisting in planning, developing, implementing, and evaluating various ongoing fisheries programs. Educator will be responsible for promoting program objectives and plans, emphasizing field applied research projects, processing and reporting commercial and recreational fisheries data, education of the fishing industry and community members on the importance of fisheries research, and delivery of fisheries programs in Suffolk County. Educators will spend time on research and fishing vessels, requiring the individual to be at sea for extended periods. The Educator is responsible for assisting in the development, preparation, and submission of grant proposals. This individual represents Cornell Cooperative Extension's Marine Program to the public, community leaders, government officials, and Cornell University as part of program delivery. Several state and federal grants fund this position.
Master's Degree in the field of Marine Science, Natural Science, Environmental Science, or related field.
Experience in fisheries and fisheries management.
Experience in marine education and community outreach.
Experience working with commercial fishermen and the commercial fishing industry on cooperative research projects.
Experience working on at-sea scientific surveys.
Ability to lift 80 lbs. unassisted.
Must be able to report to various locations to start the workday.
The ability to work flexible hours may include nights, evenings, and weekends.
Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
Ability to go to sea for various periods.
Ability to communicate daily activities, program progress, and production to Supervisor.

Experience with Cooperative Extension or other similar educational organizations.

Experience conducting dockside and at-sea research education demonstration program delivery on commercial fishing vessels.

Assessment of program progress and accomplishments of CCE/Suffolk, and if appropriate
multi-association programming for local and state use.

Identify local program needs in Fisheries Issues with the marine program Issue Leader, the marine program advisory committee, advisory groups, and program participants.
Program Development - 15%
Development of Marine programming initiatives and proposals.
Research, identification, and selection of funding resources.
Development of Marine educational programs to meet identified needs and diverse interests of participants.
Identify activities and resources necessary to implement initiatives and projects.
Create program materials to address identified needs.
Make programmatic changes based on program evaluation outcomes and to meet changing local priorities.
Structure programs to meet the needs of diverse program participants.
Program Delivery - 30%
Deliver high-quality marine educational programs and events that address local, regional, and statewide programming priorities, emphasizing fisheries demonstration research programming initiatives and the fishing industry's education and community members on the importance of fisheries research.
Utilize various educational methods that may include direct dockside and onboard teaching, group experiences, media, newsletters, electronic technology, internet, and distance learning to deliver the program.
Serve as a subject matter resource.
Foster acceptance of program, methods, and policies to address community and individual needs and consider diverse audiences.
Provide educational program efforts via mass media, including contributing articles to Fisheries publications, utilizing emails, phone messages, and website postings.
Interact with program participants professionally representing CCE at all times.
Represent CCE before the public, community leaders, government officials, Cornell, or other land grant universities professionally as part of program delivery.
Provide program education, outreach, and information in various locations at fisheries council meetings, fisheries workshops, and training.
Program Evaluation - 10%
Analyze collected program evaluation data for reporting and program improvement purposes using standard, established policy, procedure, and methods.
Interact with program participants, Association staff, program committees, county/community leaders, and other key stakeholders to collect evaluation data for improving programs.
Create and maintain a program evaluation framework.
Recommend program changes to strengthen and improve programs.
Communicate evaluation results and findings.
Applied Research - 10%
Coordinate and conduct applied fisheries research, including at-sea and dockside field activities requiring the ability to identify and lift specimens to and from scales, as well as the ability to lift items that can be in excess of 50 lbs. such as fishing gear, fish-filled totes, and other associated work-related equipment, in a safe manner.
Collect and process samples and data.
Communicate all applied research activities to Supervisor.
Provide technical support for equipment maintenance.
Maintain a direct linkage with Cornell University faculty for guidance in applied research.
Coordination and interaction with fishing industry cooperative research partners.
In-field support and coordination of demonstration research projects.
Direction - 5%
Establish program goals and priorities to align with the Association and statewide Plan of Work.
Plan marketing strategies, public affairs, and special events to reach target audiences and meet program objectives.
Identify community and fiscal resources for program continuance and enhancement.
Provide Supervisor with program-related information to assist the budget development process.
May provide input to planning accomplishment of program goals based on grant and contract feasibility.
Plan practical strategic funding efforts.
Plan staff activities.
Management - 5%
Assist in a monitoring program to ensure that educational content conforms to policies and objectives of the Association and is research-based.
Assist with monitoring program financial status to ensure compliance with funding requirements, program budget, grant specifications, and adherence to Association strategies/Plan of Work.
Assist with identifying ways to reduce costs and maximize existing resources within the Association.
Make recommendations to Supervisor regarding program budgetary needs.
Assist Supervisor with management and supervision of volunteers, as needed.
Assist Supervisor with coordination of technicians during field activities.
Coordination/Operation - 5%
Maintain and prepare materials necessary for the Marine program applying existing subject matter knowledge.
Maintain communication with constituents and the community through various methods such as newsletters, emails, electronic technology, the internet, social media, website postings, and content.
Assist with coordination of marketing and promotion of Marine program through public relation initiatives and networking/collaborating with government, economic, educational, and other organizations.
Provide information as requested to assist with preparing reports, impact statements, and success stories on program progress and accomplishments for funders, advisory committees, Board of Directors, and others, as necessary.
Prepare materials for grant/contract proposal submission.
Assist in scheduling staff activities.
Professional Improvement - 5%
Prepare for and actively participate in staff training and meetings.
Participate in staff evaluation processes as instructed.
Collaborate in activities that are in general support of Cornell Cooperative Extension and perform other duties as assigned.
