Under the direction of the Executive Director of Development, Strategic Initiatives Fundraising (EDOD-SI), the Director of Development, Strategic Initiatives (DOD-SI) will be a lead development professional responsible for creating a strategic pipeline through identifying new funding sources and securing major gifts ($100,000 - $1M+) for priorities identified by Health Sciences leadership and for managing a prospect/donor portfolio in various stages of identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship. Special emphasis will be placed on creating and implementing strategies for successful solicitations and building strategic relationships with academic and medical center faculty and staff. The DOD-SI will collaborate closely with colleagues in both Health Sciences Advancement and University Development and central fundraising teams, and will serve on additional committees and task forces as requested by Health Sciences Leadership. The DOD-SI is the direct liaison between the university and community volunteers, as well as between faculty physicians, researchers, hospital administrators and other stakeholders.
Maintains a portfolio of donor prospects that includes the most influential, complex, or highest-rated donors. May have authority to make commitments and precedent-setting decisions regarding program design, development, and procedures. May oversee the work of professional and support staff. Position is expected to raise established gift dollar amounts for DOD-level fundraising.
The DOD-HSA will create proposals, presentations, briefings, or talking points for major gifts. The DOD-SI strategically engages, prepares and briefs campus leadership to participate in major gift cultivation, solicitation and stewardship. Assists in the development and review of cross-campus fundraising proposals. In addition, the DOD-HSA will appropriately staff campus leadership, faculty and volunteers at events.
Must have access to reliable transportation.
Occasional evenings and weekends may be required.
Proven success at raising major gifts by developing and implementing cultivation and solicitation plans for gifts of $100,000+ from individuals, corporations, and foundations, both local and national. Proven record of writing proposals for significant projects, gifts (100,000+) directed to individuals, foundations, and corporations.
Proven experience in the full spectrum of development including: gift policies, solicitations, stewardship, donor recognition, high level boards, support groups and administration.
Expert working knowledge of all aspects of fundraising, donor relations, and public relations concepts, principles, procedures, and techniques.
Expert knowledge of all aspects of the location, including current issues of concern for both the campus and/or throughout higher education/healthcare, generally.
Expert written and interpersonal communication skills, including political acumen, to establish and maintain good working relationships throughout the organization and with outside constituencies. Expert skills in making persuasive and compelling presentations of goals and objectives for a location in order to secure gifts.
Demonstrated experience in institutional fundraising or equivalent experience.
Demonstrated strong organizational, managerial/mentoring and leadership skills with ability to lead by example and encourage collaborative efforts.
Strong interpersonal and team-building skills to establish and maintain good working relationships with colleagues, faculty, donors, volunteers, and university officials, with an emphasis on tact, diplomacy, flexibility, collaboration, professionalism, and discretion.
Expertise using on-line databases and other software to create retrieve, and compile up-to the- minute documents and historical information for proposal reports and analysis.
Strong sense of ethical conduct that will inspire confidence with colleagues and donor prospects, while maintaining confidentiality in all matters as they relate to sensitive donor relations issues.
