Manages the acquisitions department of the IU Press. Supervises a team of acquisitions editors and their assistants. Works with the Director of IU Press and Digital Publishing to formulate and update a long-term acquisition strategic plan. Directs overall editorial strategy and book list-building opportunities, and is responsible for seasonal list planning. Acquires 25 or more scholarly and trade books each year in assigned fields.
Develops and monitors long-term IU Press acquisition strategic plan and department budget. Ensures that the acquisitions team meets productivity and revenue objectives seasonally and annually. Forecasts and monitors seasonal lists, coordinating closely with other departments. Mentors, trains, and monitors the performance of acquisition editors. Leads team meetings and participates in seasonal list setting meetings, senior management meetings, and front list post-publication assessment meetings.
Acquires up to 25 books each year in assigned areas, including philosophy, African studies, and Jewish studies. Develops book lists in assigned and new areas to advance Press's publishing program and to meet revenue goals. Analyzes publishing and scholarly trends in appropriate academic fields, evaluates the performance of previously published books. Develops contacts with prospective authors. Assesses manuscripts and proposals, engages peer reviewers, identifies publishable manuscripts. Works with acquisition assistant to prepare proposal materials for Press's Faculty Board, including marketing plans and financial projections. Negotiates contracts with authors, agents, and other publishers. Oversees manuscript development with authors. Coordinates with other departments to plan and implement publishing strategy. Prepares book budgets. Drafts and approves book jacket and catalog copy. Serves as chief liaison between authors and the Press at the beginning of the publishing process.
Bachelors degree in English, communications, journalism, public relations, or a related field plus four years of experience in a related field and one year of management experience in a related field.

Master's degree and experience in scholarly book acquisition. Knowledge of the current state of the scholarly book business, advances in digital communication tools, and trends in academic publishing and social media. Familiarity with budget creation and financial forecasting. Familiarity with long term strategic planning. Computer literacy and competency, including familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite and database management, preferably FileMaker; facility with using online resources. Excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills. Excellent interpersonal skills, including a demonstrated ability to interact tactfully, courteously, and with discretion; the ability to establish and maintain good working relationships.
Working Conditions / Demands
This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. Occasional lifting is expected.
