The Harvard Kennedy School's (HKS) Office of Communications and Public Affairs (OCPA) has an immediate opening for a talented, multi-disciplinary, self-motivated designer to be part of our design team to develop and implement compelling visual design solutions according to an established brand strategy. The candidate will design for a multi-platform environment in print and digital for internal and external communications.
This fast-paced office that includes working with two other designers, requires an experienced designer to manage both digital and print design projects from concept through production. Projects include designing a range of multi-platform communications products for school-wide needs and for other departments within Harvard Kennedy School. The position will also work collaboratively with strategists, writers, editors, developers, videographers, photographers, printers, fabricators, and project managers.
The successful candidate will be part of a team of communications specialists elevating ground-breaking research, attracting and retaining a diverse and talented student body, building a world-wide community of alumni, expanding the reach of our teaching and learning, promoting fundraising initiatives, and furthering the impact of HKS through various channels. Job-specific responsibilities and essential functions (include, but are not limited to):
Develop concepts and designs for a variety of digital and print projects for the School and partner/clients within HKS based on established goals
Translate complex research material into coherent editorial and information design for use in digital channels and/or print
Create rich editorial design experiences for print and digital publishing
Design seamlessly across platforms including digital, print, social, and multimedia
Articulate rationale informally and formally—through brainstorming sessions, creative briefs, and presentations.
Share ideas generously and work as part of an integrated team collaborating with designers, strategists, writers, editors, developers, videographers, photographers, printers, fabricators, and project managers.
Manage and track multiple projects at one time with clear process ensuring timely delivery
Provide creative and art direction for visual assets—photography, illustration, infographics, data visualization
Stay on top of emerging tools, technologies, and platforms
Use best practices associated with design and typography in both digital and print
Ensure HKS brand standards are adhered to and maintained
Manage and optimize digital assets through HKS Webdam system
Contribute to OCPA goals by accomplishing related duties as required

Salary Range: $61,400 - $100,600 Note: Starting salaries typically fall in the lower half of the salary range; however, they are ultimately determined by the scope of the position, the candidate's relevant experience, and internal equity.

Union: 00 - Non Union, Exempt or Temporary
Bachelor's degree or certificate in graphic design and a minimum of 6 years of professional design experience in integrated, cross-channel marketing communications. Candidates must submit work samples/portfolio - please see application instructions below.
Strong portfolio with excellence in design, typography, art direction, and production experience in print (including magazine); digital (UX/UI design, animation), environmental graphics, identity, and branding
Solid mastery of Adobe CC products (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, XD), Salesforce or other email marketing platform, and experience with Microsoft suite (powerpoint, excel, docs)
Multimedia design experience (e.g. After Effects, motion graphics, video/audio for development of instagram stories, audiograms, animated gifs)
Photography skills an asset (camera is available for use)
Understanding of and experience with data visualization tools and infographic development a plus.
Vector and custom illustration skills an asset
Experience using Drupal preferred and/or other website content management systems, HTML and CSS
Ability to work independently on projects or collaboratively in a team environment
Ability to think strategically, creatively, and flexibly
Strong presentation and communication skills, excellent planning and organizational skills, and attention to quality and detail
Experience in higher education or public policy an asset
