Position Summary:
The Content Development Manager reports directly to the VP and Chief Marketing & Enrollment Officer on an interim basis and will lead content development across university functional areas, manage professionals in the editorial group, and interface with leadership across the University including the president's office, provost, student life, institutional Advancement, legal and counterparts at all the undergraduate and graduate schools. In the external media arena, this position requires creative and strategic outreach to relevant editors and reporters in the general press and Jewish newspapers.

Position Responsibilities:
  • Day-to-day in-house lead for the University' editorial and communications efforts in the U.S. and Israel; build awareness and recognition of the University to key constituencies as a leading academic institution with a unique positioning, working closely with the Chief Marketing & Enrollment Officer and department's team of communications professionals
  • Develop a deep knowledge of our faculty and University activities, secular and religious, to identify and place strategically selected stories and respond to queries that demonstrate that this is a University that is doing important scholarly work that impacts the world.
  • Strategically control Web content to promote schools/colleges to modern Orthodox students around the world, prospective students and their parents, and donors
  • Recognize opportunities for news and cover or assign coverage of events, programs and newsworthy activities; assign and manage writers (in-house and freelance) and edit their work for University style and messaging
  • Write content for online and print news publications and other marketing vehicles as needed and utilize a Web content management tool to post online stories, videos, stills, etc.
  • Establish and maintain owned media channels, and help direct the marketing and communication efforts of University departments and programs
  • Oversee University-wide email schedule, design and distribution, ensuring proper branding and messaging through iModules platform.
  • Team with ITS, HR and other CPA professionals to develop, launch and maintain the University's Intranet
  • Liaison with the Einstein and Cardozo communications and public affairs departments on media relations
  • Work closely with the Chief Marketing & Enrollment Officer and the Office of the President on key messaging, media relations, issues management and crisis communications efforts
  • Work closely with the Chief Marketing & Enrollment Officer, Director of Advertising and Interactive Media, and Director of Creative Services on recentralizing CPA functions
  • Oversight of the YU news blog and faculty news blog- editorial calendar, social posts for YU main. Strategic oversight of internal publications- identifying stories, managing the editorial team on this.
  • Developing editorial calendar, determine needs for photo/video, exploring additional content extensions- Podcasts, brochures etc
  • Further expand our social media footprint- working with the Directors to grow earned media channels
  • Work with external communication agencies as needed to identify PR opportunities

    Experience & Educational Background:
  • 3+ years of experience in content development or communications, preferably in an education or Jewish Communal Organization
  • Bachelor's degree in journalism, English or media
  • Knowledge of the Jewish Community and sensitive to its issues and practices

    Skills & Competencies:
  • Understand the Jewish Community and the key players in it
  • Discrete, positive, energetic, creative, hard-working, a team player, has a sense of humor
  • Brings an understanding of nuance, good judgment, internal and external politics
  • Knowledge of secular and Jewish media, with close relationships in both
  • Possess a keen knowledge of the institution, its message and vision to accurately direct a team of writers and establish relationships with key newsmakers and sources including academic programming
  • Excellent written and oral skills as well as outstanding interpersonal skills
  • Experience with and accomplishments in the mainstream, trade and digital media
  • Ability to articulate the university's mission to different constituencies in a targeted manner
