Position Summary: Under the direction of the Head Coach, the Assistant Coach/Instructor will be responsible for designing skill development programs for student-athletes and assisting in the oversight of all aspects of the NCAA Division I Baseball program. This position will build and maintain positive working relationships with student-athletes, coaches, and staff, while striving for excellence in all aspects of the program and representing the University, the Department of Athletics, and the baseball program with the highest professional and ethical behavior.
Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Duties): • Teach, coach, mentor and inspire student-athletes through graduation, including instruction and skill development in assigned specialty area(s). • Attend and participate in all practices, competitions, and other program or Department activities as directed by the Head Coach. • Provide instruction on safety rules, team concepts, game strategies (including scouting reports), and sports etiquette. • Assist in identifying, evaluating, and recruiting prospective student-athletes who are capable of competing at the NCAA Division I level, succeeding academically and graduating, and who have the potential to contribute and improve the current team roster. • Assist with administrative and organizational aspects of the program as needed, including (but not limited to) equipment, team travel, clubhouse management, public relations, and social media. • Adhere to (and promote compliance with) the rules and regulations of the Saint Joseph’s University, NCAA, Atlantic 10 Conference and any other relevant local, state and national governing body. As a condition of employment, the Assistant Coach/Instructor will be required to participate in rules education programs offered by the Department of Athletics.
Secondary Responsibilities: • Assist the Head Coach in identifying individual and team strengths and growth areas to develop strategies and game plans to maximize performance. • Participate in the organization and implementation of camps/clinics, fundraising activities, official and unofficial recruiting visits and the ongoing support and development of student-athlete academic success. • Reinforce and promote healthy sport performance principles related to strength & conditioning, nutrition, and mental health, as well as general wellness principles of stress management and good sleep habits. • Provide advice and counsel to the Head Coach in matters related to team policies and student-athlete accountability. • Support the program and Department efforts pertaining to fiscal responsibility by following business office protocol and budgetary guidelines. • Provide functional supervision of team managers and other student employees. • The person who holds this position has been classified as a Campus Security Authority under the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act (Clery Act).

Minimum Qualifications (Education/Training and Experience Required): • Bachelor’s degree. • Minimum of a combination of 3 years of college or professional coaching experience, or at least 2 years of professional playing experience. • Demonstrated knowledge of and adherence to NCAA and member conference rules and regulations. • Demonstrated self-direction and motivation with the ability to work independently and work under pressure. • Strong administrative skills including attention to detail and the ability to prioritize, organize, and budget. • Strong interpersonal and communication skills. • Ability to establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships with diverse constituents and promote and foster an inclusive environment. • Current CPR, AED, and First Aid certification must be obtained/maintained. • Valid driver’s license and successful clearance of motor vehicle record check. • Successful background check clearance under Saint Joseph’s University’s “Minors on Campus Policy” (PA Criminal Records Check, FBI Fingerprinting Check and PA Child Abuse Clearance Check).
Preferred Qualifications: • Master’s degree. • 5 years of coaching experience at the collegiate or professional level with at least 3 of those years coaching pitchers. • Previous experience recruiting student-athletes at the college level. • Ability to throw a high quality batting practice, hit quality fungos to position players, and other baseball-specific skills related to running drills in practice.
Physical Requirements and/or Unusual Work Hours: • Must have flexibility and be able to sustain long work hours including evenings, early mornings and weekends. • Position requires frequent travel. ? Ability to lift equipment or other heavy items (50-75 pounds), work outdoors and in various environmental conditions, and otherwise be able to assist in preparing facilities and equipment for practice/competition.
