The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB), Institute of Human Virology (IHV) is currently recruiting for a Manager of Public and Media Relations . This position will report to IHV's Chief Communications and Public Affairs Officer. Possess subject matter expertise in a professional discipline. Achieves objectives through coordinated efforts of others, typically by managing recruitment, engagement, performance, and development of employees. Develops, implements, and manages goals and objectives. Participates in strategic planning. Enforces processes, practices, and/or policies. Manages operations, workflow, projects, and/or systems that have strategic impact. Accountable for operational and/or financial resources. Accountable for legal and policy compliance.
Manages the daily operations, typically, of a work unit (group(s) or team(s) of staff who perform similar type work) or function (division(s), program(s), or specialized unit(s) within a department). Develops and achieves broadly stated goals and objectives in alignment with defined strategy. Primarily responsible for overall execution of results. Recommends financial, personnel, and significant strategic decisions for upper senior professional approval.

Manage marketing and public relations for the institute. Provide public relations and marketing coverage for the institute with the development of public relations strategies and tactics.
Manage press releases and marketing information for media and communication distribution. Ensure institute image is positively maintained
Manage media relations and marketing situations to include writing and editing various publications, planning special events, working with vendors, handling constituent requests to ensure communications goals and objectives are achieved.
Advise leadership on strategic and effective reactions to breaking news or media relations opportunities. Assist in planning and management of crisis communications, as needed. Supports the accountability for success of special short- and long-term communication projects that increase the University's exposure and recognition.
Supports the management of the distribution of press release, marketing, and media packets
Assist in planning and writing stories, news advisories and releases, and in speaking with media on the phone or in person. Stories and articles may appear in publications or on the Web.
Collaborate with other media representatives, editorial, web, and graphics staff to develop effective marketing campaigns and plans.
Stays current on changing technologies and news trends.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Education: Bachelor's degree, such as English, journalism, or communications
Experience: Five (5) years of experience in marketing, public relations, communications, or media, public or client relations.
Supervisory Experience: One (1) year of work coordination, scheduling, and training of others.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
Thorough knowledge of position requirements. Thorough knowledge of all applicable requirements, regulations, and laws. Skill in effective use of applicable technology/systems. Ability to effectively communicate both verbal and written thoughts, ideas, and facts. Ability to support a mission and strategic vision. Instructional, training, and teambuilding skills to strengthen and cultivate relationships. Skill in consultation management.
