This recruitment will be used to fill one part-time (approximately 17 hours per week) Temp Public Information Rep 1 position for Sea Grant at Oregon State University (OSU).
This part-time temporary position uses social media to promote the work of Oregon Sea Grant (OSG)-funded staff, researchers, Extension specialists and students. This position also uses social media platforms to inform our online audiences about events, news, research, outreach activities and educational opportunities that are typically related to marine science and coastal topics.
Our social media audiences include teachers, coastal residents, ocean enthusiasts, marine scientists, college students, recent college graduates, seafood and fishing organizations, and social media managers at Oregon universities. This position will help OSG finalize and implement a social media strategy. It will also manage OSG's central Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts. A large portion of the job involves posting content on these pages on generally a daily basis. The successful candidate must be a detail-oriented, initiative-taking wordsmith who can accurately and quickly translate OSG's work into lay terms and make OSG's social media content appealing to a range of audiences.
Three years experience in gathering information, writing/producing materials, presenting information to the public and public relations. One year of this experience must have included responsibility for press releases and interaction with the news media. A Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communication or closely related field may substitute for up to two years of the general experience.
Excellent writing skills.
Experience managing a Facebook, Twitter or Instagram account in a role that involved sharing content on it on at least a weekly basis.
Evidence of ability to accurately interpret and summarize technical, specialized or complex information for public understanding.
Excellent command of English syntax, grammar and spelling, demonstrated in accurate, concise, error-free, easy-to-understand copy.
Oregon Sea Grant adheres to the policies of OSU and/or health authorities regarding working during COVID-19. This position has the ability to work remotely. If telecommuting, routine check-in meetings via phone or Zoom will be held with OSG's communications manager.
