The Upper Midwest Agricultural Safety and Health Center (UMASH) is a multidisciplinary collaboration of five research and health care institutions including the University of Minnesota School of Public Health and the College of Veterinary Medicine, the Minnesota Department of Health, the National Farm Medicine Center at the Marshfield Clinic, and the Migrant Clinicians Network. The primary role of the communications coordinator is working directly under the Director of Outreach/Center Coordinator to assist with planning and coordinating a range of communications and outreach activities to support the outreach priorities of the center. Performs a broad range of internal and external communications related work including print, social media, web content, multimedia, event coordination, ensuring consistent and effective messaging across all platforms. This person will have a skill set to manage workflows throughout the resource and content development process, incorporating best practices and bringing innovation into the Center. This is a .5 FTE position.
Responsibilities: 50% Communications
Plan and facilitate weekly communications meetings; serve as the team leader to coordinate communications and recurring functions and activities; monitor progress and workflow across the team, solicit input, assess priorities
Directly supervise and recruit undergraduate students: assign and review work, lead recruiting efforts and assist in selecting candidates for undergraduate communications positions
Leverage communications skills and experience to advise on best practices; research and identify new and creative approaches for effective and impactful communications and marketing campaigns, resource development, graphic design concepts, etc.
Work closely with Outreach Director on planning and/or responding to new issues, priorities, initiatives, unusual situations or unexpected outcomes.
Write, review and edit content for: website, email communications, newsletters, spotlight stories, research briefs, and; manage review/approval process.
Research and identify innovative and effective communications strategies that promote greater equity, diversity and inclusiveness
Assist with routine website updates;
Assist with writing and design of email communications and newsletters for dissemination via Mailchimp
25% event planning
Assist leadership team in preliminary planning discussions for key public stakeholder engagement events, advisory board meetings, and quarterly center meetings to understand goals and parameters.
Provide logistical support for detailed event planning: scheduling, meeting space, catering, technology needs, marketing and event program and materials design and production, developing marketing campaign and strategies for integrating with other communications and outreach initiatives.
Assist leadership with meeting facilitation, technical support, notetaking, communications, follow-up activities, etc.
25% strategic communications and administrative support
Assist leadership on planning and integrating strategic communications with outreach and broader initiatives of the center
Assist with development and design of strategic communications materials to promote the center and highlight successes and outcomes.
Assist with compiling and editing summary reports to funders and other stakeholders.
Serve as point of contact for knowledge management resources related to communications and outreach
Research and provide strategies for impactful and effective messaging and presentation.
All required qualifications must be documented on application materials.
BA/BS degree plus at least two years of experience or combination of related education and work experience equal to at least six years
Previous experience planning and implementing strategic communications & marketing, [outreach and communications campaigns]
Experience planning and implementing social media engagement
Demonstrated exceptional organizational skills to balance multiple projects simultaneously, coordinating workflow and priorities
Thrives in dynamic and fast moving team environment
Supervisory experience to include training, assigning and reviewing work
Strong interpersonal skills and ability to lead, foster collaboration, promote creativity and recognize individual and collective efforts of team members
Strong writing and editing skills to include writing for technical and non-technical audiences, such as research briefs, spotlight stories, newsletters, website content, etc.
Background or training in agriculture, public health, or similar discipline
