The Director, Communications and Web Presence oversees a team of communications and web professionals and provides strategic counsel and guidance to colleagues and team members on internal and external communications content (both written and visual), including language, tone, messaging, brand guidelines, and publication effectiveness. This role is responsible for identifying opportunities to optimize how employees receive and access information. The Director, Communications and Web Presence is responsible for synthesizing complex materials to craft creative, persuasive messaging for a variety of audiences. In this role, the Director, Communications and Web Presence will work with other division (University HR, Office of Equity, Equal Opportunity, and Title IX, and Office of Culture, Ethics, and Compliance) leaders to develop and manage a holistic strategy for delivering quality communications and continuous content and delivery improvement. This individual will support governance for communications through the implementation of standards, procedures, and quality measures. This role will execute USCâs vision while championing USCâs culture and values.
The candidate for the position of Director, Communications and Web Presence must meet the following qualifications:
Bachelorâs degree in communications, English, business, design, public relations, journalism, marketing or another related field.
Ten or more years of experience in one or more of the following fields: communications, public relations or marketing.
Four or more years of experience leading teams in a management or leadership role.
High-energy, reliable and enthusiastic team player.
Strong project management and organizational skills with the ability to manage several projects and deadlines simultaneously.
Demonstrated knowledge of human-centered design and customer/user experience best practices.
Ability to think strategically and serve as a thought-partner to the Executive Division team.
Exceptional written and oral communications skills including copyediting and familiarity with AP style.
Experience developing and reviewing content for web platforms including websites and social media platforms.
Ability to synthesize complex materials and to craft creative, persuasive messaging for a variety of audiences.
Experience providing frequent, regular performance coaching and encouraging effective behavior for individual and team success.
Experience anticipating and supporting customer needs and articulating a strategy that motivates others to action.

The ideal candidate for the position of Director, Communications and Web Presence has the following qualifications:
Masterâs degree communications, English, business, design, public relations, journalism, marketing or another related field.
Twelve or more years of experience in one or more of the following fields: higher education, marketing and communications or user experience/customer experience.
Six or more years of experience leading teams in a management or leadership role. Experience developing and managing a diverse, high-performing team.
Experience developing customer relationships and delivering a customer-focused service.
The candidate for the position of Director, Communications and Web Presence will be responsible for:
Supporting critical change and transformational initiatives through the development of communication strategies and the management of execution. Maintaining content, design, access rights, editorial guidelines and archival processes for all communications. Collecting and reporting on team activities. Ensuring communications are timely, necessary, and substantively correct, and that communication content is informing and engaging. Selecting communication channels and mediums that are relevant to division stakeholders.
Gathering data about University employeesâ interactions with the division and the information it shares through the employee portal. Gaining understanding of the University employee landscape through segmentation strategies such as developing user personas. Maintaining strong cross-functional relationships to build a deep understanding of the division, the university and organizational culture. Building and maintaining strong relationships with customers, partners, and stakeholders throughout the University to ensure consistent, reliable division service is communicated to a range of university stakeholders and to partner to gather information relevant to employees for sharing through division-owned employee communication channels. Overseeing communications to ensure they are on-brand with University messaging and adhere to University brand guidelines.
Developing plans to implement distinctive experiences through digital technology to empower employees to find information easily. Supporting leaders and team members in delivering effective messages through strong writing and storytelling. Providing writing and editing support to ensure all communication materials meet quality and consistency standards. Driving best-in-class customer service to USC through effective division engagement. Gathering data about University employeesâ interactions with the division. Gaining understanding of the University employee landscape through segmentation strategies such as developing user personas.

Working with other division leaders to develop and manage a holistic strategy for delivering quality communications and continuous content and delivery improvement. Supporting governance for communications through the implementation of standards, procedures, and quality measures.
Maintaining visual standards and imagery that reflects the diversity of the University community. Proactively leading university-wide communications projects, events and campaigns that align with division priorities and values.
