ASTA is seeking someone with a proven track record of success addressing complex regulatory and legislative issues. Candidate must be knowledgeable about procedures, operations, and functions of the legislative and executive branches of the federal government. Must be capable of conducting research and analysis, have strong written and verbal communication skills and a capacity to multi-task.
The Senior Director, Government and Regulatory Affairs is responsible for the legislative and regulatory activities of the Association. The incumbent reports directly to and works closely with the President/CEO and represents the organization in front of key government officials and policymakers.
Develop and implement ASTA’s government and legislative affairs strategy through engagement with Congress, the Executive Branch and grassroots involvement of members. Raise awareness of the seed industry in Washington by building relationships with like-minded organizations and coalitions, Hill offices and government agencies.
Analyze proposed legislation and regulatory actions and develop ASTA responses via formal comments, testimony, and letters. Work with other ASTA staff to proactively address seed industry issues via legislation or otherwise.
Coordinate with communications staff to develop communications plans and materials to support ASTA’s legislative and regulatory priorities. Report on federal regulatory and legislative items to the membership via newsletters and regular updates.
Work with committee leadership to develop and execute priority activities and conduct several meetings a year for each committee. Create new working groups to address new issues as needed.
Assist with planning educational sessions at ASTA meetings. Make presentations on behalf of ASTA at meetings of other state, regional and national organizations.
Oversee and coordinate the work of the Director of Government Affairs and Director of State Government Affairs. Oversee annual and issue specific association fly-ins.
Background in legislative and regulatory matters with state or federal government and/or in a government affairs position. Hold a degree from an accredited four-year college. Background in agriculture is preferred.
