This position is responsible for media relations strategy, reporting, writing, pitching and communications execution for medical/research/science content originating from faculty across Feinberg School of Medicine, the McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science, science departments in the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences, the Office of Research, INVO, Simpson Querrey Biomedical Research Center and various additional scientific research centers and institutes.
Media relations strategy, storytelling and execution, including content creation, pitching and communications execution for medical/research/science content originating from faculty across Feinberg School of Medicine, the McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science, science departments in the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences, the Office of Research, INVO, Simpson Querrey Biomedical Research Center and additional scientific research centers and institutes. This includes providing media relations support for the University, with an emphasis on research activities, medical, health and science stories, writing engaging press releases and media pitches as well executing story development as well as responding to, and managing, media inquiries.
Establishing ongoing relationships with media, including proactively contacting reporters and pitching media stories with targeted media outlets – on particular media across the local, national and international media landscapes, including tier-one media outlets as well as tech, science, medical and engineering-based online media, print and broadcast outlets, scientific journals and new media.
Coordinating with other members of the Office of Global Marketing and Communications staff, especially the lead Science and Engineering Editor, Social Media team and Web Comm and Marketing, to promote the University’s engineering, science and research activities. Developing strategic concepts, synthesizing complex information and developing media-worthy stories for use in marketing communications. Developing and repurposing content for social media as well as working to identify and develop additional platforms for news content and stories. Storytelling for Northwestern’s website, electronic newsletter, print publications and videos.
Identifying news and thought leadership opportunities by working with faculty across Feinberg School of Medicine, the McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science and the science departments in the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences, the Office of Research, INVO, Simpson Querrey Biomedical Research Center and additional scientific research centers and institutes.
Matching faculty with breaking news stories to place faculty as expert commentators in the local, national and global media—using the trend report process, media advisories, social media and proactive pitching, among other strategies.
Identifying thought leadership platforms, speaking engagements, expert placement and providing faculty with op-ed training, pitching and editing assistance.
Conducting peer assessments and leveraging media metrics and analytics to increase awareness and elevate reputation for research activities, medical, science and engineering eminence at Northwestern.
Performs other duties as assigned
Candidates for this position must have strong media relations skills with existing science/tech relationships at top tier, specialist and hybrid media publications. The role requires strong writing skills with specific expertise in writing about science, medicine and engineering; an undergraduate degree in English, journalism, public relations, marketing, communications, or a related field. In-house experience at a PR firm, medical/research/science-focused organization or corporation, preferred.
Minimum Competencies: (Skills, knowledge, and abilities.)
This position demands experience in developing media strategies, pitching news to reporters, identifying and synthesizing relevant content, and writing about medical/research/science; sound interpersonal communication skills; exceptional writing skills; strong organizational skills; the ability to synthesize and write quickly; networking and relationship building; and the ability to work well with faculty members, other University staff and reporters and editors. Experience working in fast-paced mission-driven environments is also key.
Preferred Qualifications: (Education and experience)
Sound news judgment.
Excellent writing skills with knowledge of AP style and grammar.
Knowledge and familiarity with a Macintosh OS computer environment.
Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines consistently.
Strong interpersonal and communications skills, patience and teamwork skills.
