The Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of California, Davis invites applications for two qualified Junior Specialists in the following sub-specialties: Emergency Medicine and Pediatric Emergency Care. Appointments will range from 75-100%. Hire dates will vary between August 15 and September 30, 2020. Junior Specialist positions are short-term, two-year maximum appointments based on the needs of the research project. Position A will be supervised by Allyson Sage, and position B will be supervised by Maria Marois.
Junior Specialist appointees will be involved in interdisciplinary studies focusing on Emergency Medicine care for pediatric and/or adult patients. Successful candidates will participate in screening, recruitment, and enrollment of Emergency Department patients into approved research studies. Other study procedures as part of this work may include data collection (interviews/questionnaires), abstracting data from electronic medical records according to study protocols; inputting abstracted data; storing and shipping samples according to appropriate university guidelines; conducting patient follow-up activities; and resolving data queries. Appointees may be expected to review literature for background information and emerging science relevant to emergency medicine research projects, and research proposals, journal manuscripts, and publications related to their sub-specialty area. Appointees will participate in emergency medicine Research-In-Progress forums and in regular study meetings with the PI and other investigators where progress of the work is discussed. They will also participate in protocol reviews for new studies and provide substantive feedback on content and implementation. Junior Specialists may participate in training on neurocognitive testing and other follow-up testing of pediatric research participants, developing expert skills in assessing patients and coding/scoring assessments performed by others. Junior Specialists may participate in the PECARN Research Coordinator Advisory Committee and complete assignments delegated by this professional committee. Junior Specialists may coordinate community consultation (e.g. presentations to community and service providers for participant recruitment purpose) and public disclosure activities to support an application for federal exception from informed consent for emergency research and be involved in the release of study results to the public as required by applicable regulations. The ideal candidate(s) will have strong interpersonal, communication, and decision-making skills, as well as the ability to work well independently and as part of a team.
This position will be located primarily in the Emergency Department. Work hours to be arranged, but evening and some weekend hours may be required depending on the specific position. Restricted vacation during peak periods.
Basic Qualifications: -Bachelor degree in Biological Sciences or related field required with a minimum of 6 months experience in laboratory, clinical or applied research. -Ability to screen and recruit patients into clinical research trials. -Knowledge and understanding of 'Good Clinical Practices' for clinical research. -Ability to interpret and understand clinical protocols and provide instruction on their implementation. -Ability to read and understand patient medical records, abstract clinical data from medical records and record accurately on case report forms and/or in electronic databases. -Excellent communication skills in interacting with research participants, physicians, hospital clinical staff, university department staff/representatives, and research sponsor. -Excellent organizational skills in maintaining thorough and accurate study documentation while managing multiple clinical trials. -Computer skills sufficient to effectively use MS Word, Excel, web interfaces and patient and research databases. Preferred Qualifications: -Some classroom experience in laboratory, clinical and/or applied research is strongly preferred. -Experience in an Emergency Department and handling specimens is strongly preferred. -Experience with electronic health record system preferred.
