POSITION SUMMARY: As a community leader and ambassador for the business community, the President & CEO provides leadership, vision, strategic thinking, and implementation of programs for the Oak Ridge Chamber of Commerce. Collaborates closely and teams well with other business organizations and The City of Oak Ridge with the goal of helping businesses prosper throughout the community. Cooperatively builds relationships with other local Chambers of Commerce (Knoxville, Anderson County and Blount County) to coordinate regional efforts. The President & CEO will have experience in budget development and management, operating an IRC 501 (c) (6) non-profit organization, strategic planning, policy development, membership recruitment and retention, fundraising, and people management. Must be an effective leader with strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively and build strong relationships with various types of business leaders, political leaders, and community members. The President & CEO is expected to provide leadership and direction that creates enthusiasm and drives momentum among the membership, chamber staff, regional business, and collaborative partnerships.
RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POSITION:
Strategic Planning and Implementation: In collaboration with the Board, the President & CEO leads the creation and implementation of the strategic plan for the Chamber.
Advocacy: The President & CEO will lead efforts to create a positive and pro-business environment by identifying issues of importance to the business community and advancing pro-business positions.
Member Services and Sales: The President & CEO is responsible for the overall performance of membership activities, including membership acquisition, stewardship, and retention.
Program Management: The President & CEO oversees and assesses the schedule, design, budget, implementation, evaluation, and appropriate adjustments for the Chamber’s programs and events.
Economic Development: The President & CEO is responsible for the Chamber’s role in economic development, including business retention/expansion, infrastructure, workforce/education, health and safety, civic innovation, and collaboration with city and county governmental agencies, and other economic development organizations.
Finance and Accounting: The President & CEO ensures the Chamber establishes and follows generally accepted accounting and financial practices that provide organizational safety and soundness, achieve budget targets, sustain operations, and grow capacity for new initiatives.
Public Relations/Outreach: The President & CEO is responsible for maintaining the Chamber’s dynamic, positive, and forward-thinking public image, including strategies for marketing, communications, public speaking, and relations with members, the community, and media.
EXPERIENCE: A minimum of 5 years of successful experience in executive management and leadership positions within the private, public, or non-profit sectors is required. Chamber of Commerce experience is preferred, but not required.
EDUCATION: A bachelor’s degree in business or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required. CCE certification is preferred, but not required.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
General knowledge of business practices including the ability to forecast/develop a yearly budget, ensure timely delivery of monthly financial reports to the Board and maintain control of expenditures,
Working knowledge of local government laws, ordinances, zoning requirements, and real estate taxes,
Working knowledge of state and local legislative political processes and environments,
Working knowledge of Chamber Master Management Software or a similar type of platform,
A good understanding of social media and the role it can play in the Chamber’s strategy,
Ability to analyze, understand, and act upon complex legislation that affects the business sector,
Proven ability to develop and implement strategic plans to identify and achieve business objectives,
Demonstrated ability to effectively lead and manage people and to provide effective oversight of daily operations and administration,
Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing,
Compelling speaker who is comfortable using technology in front of audiences,
Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to maintain effective communications with the Board of Directors, Chamber members and staff; effectively collaborate with business leaders, government representatives, civic leaders, and members of the public.

RESIDENCE: The President & CEO will reside in Oak Ridge, TN or will relocate within the city limits before December 31, 2020. Must be a U.S. Citizen.
