Main Purpose of the Role The Communications Manager is the facilitator for communications at Cathedral School for Boys. Using skills in marketing, public relations, and writing in print, electronic, and social media, the Communications Manager serves in an internal capacity working with all departments in the school as well as in an external capacity by creatively seeking ways to publicize and celebrate school programs and achievements to our community.
Key Responsibilities: (The primary tasks, functions and deliverables of the role) • Develop and execute a communications, branding, and marketing plan in collaboration with the Headmaster, Director of Admission, and Director of Development that targets key constituencies and builds awareness and understanding of the school’s mission and programs • Manage the Cathedral School brand internally and externally by ensuring all communications and marketing properly support and reflect the school’s style guide, mission, and strategic goals, ensuring consistency in tone, messaging, and graphic identity • Develop and implement an effective public relations program, as needed, including writing and distributing press releases, maintaining the school’s profile on various school organization and ranking websites and search engines, and maintaining and updated and compelling social media presence • Oversee and manage all official school communications and ensure that materials reflect our mission, philosophy, and values • Establish an annual communications calendar that includes a production schedule for all print and electronic materials, internal and external correspondence, and specific marketing projects • Create and implement an overall electronic communications strategy and serve as primary content/organizational manager for the school website, e-communications to various constituencies, social media sites, etc. • Monitor influence of communications by analyzing website, social media, and communication metrics, and offer advice on current trends and best practices • Oversee all aspects of production of CSB’s annual Red & Gold print publication (which includes the school’s annual report) • Manage proofreading for all external communications for various school departments including Admissions, Athletics, and Development • Collaborate with school leaders on communication policies for parents, students, and staff • Work with the Management Team to create a crisis management communications plan • Collaborate on keynote speeches and presentations for various school events • Work with Director of Admission to ensure that admissions materials are consistent in promoting the school to prospective families. Collaborate on communications with regard to printed and online admission materials, tours, and admission events • Support key initiatives through development of creative approaches and review of all materials to ensure high-impact constituency appeal • Advise on current industry trends in communications and marketing • Work closely with outside vendors, photographers, designers, printing firms, and consultants • Help coordinate the production & distribution of invitations to school events, including online registration setup and tracking • Attend and participate in school events, as needed • Manage school photograph inventory, taking and collecting current photos as needed • Maintain an archive of published pieces, photographs, and historical information • Help manage and promote photography database for the school and photograph or arrange photo coverage of various key events throughout the year • Other duties include general administrative support as needed
Skills and Competencies (The abilities that the individual needs in order to perform this role effectively) • Proven strong writing and editorial skills with an ability to produce materials quickly and in a variety of styles (published articles, speeches, social media postings) • Strong interpersonal skills and customer service focus and ability to handle school information with discretion, tact, and diplomacy • Strong attention to detail, proactive in nature, ability to prioritize, and flexibility in managing multiple deadlines • Creative, collegial, approachable, and eager to assist and approach tasks (occasionally outside of the job description) with humor, warmth, and enthusiasm, for the greater good of the school • Resilient and thrives in fast-paced, ever changing environment
Required Experience and Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree Five-years of experience in marketing/communications, journalism, media, or non-profit/education Experience with SEO and Google Analytics preferred Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Creative Suite, Blackbaud / Whipple Hill or similar desktop publishing software and content management systems Work with various social media platforms
