The Vera List Center for Art and Politics (VLC) is a leading scholarly research center and public forum for art, culture, and politics. An initiative of the Schools of Public Engagement, the Center serves a critical mission: to foster a vibrant and diverse community of artists, scholars, and policymakers who take creative, intellectual, and political risks to bring about positive change. A pioneer in the field, the Center was founded in 1992 and now offers a range of activities that encompass public programs, exhibitions, conferences, artist and student fellowships, classes, and books featuring art and research projects invested in the political agency of the arts. In recent years, publications and the international biennial Jane Lombard Prize for Art and Social Justice have further raised the reach and impact of the VLC. The Center's website captures much of this programming, with event videos and commissioned writings, and is an important destination for researchers, students, and artists from different parts of the world.
The Assistant Director of Editorial Initiatives will help: develop the editorial profile of the Center's various communication platforms – the website with online archive, the newsletters, print and e-publications, social media and, in the future, podcasts; integrate digital and non-digital initiatives through a comprehensive communications plan; and build out the Center's distributed learning capacities. In support of the Center's mission, the AD will help nurture diverse audiences and communities, both virtual and in New York City, and ensure that the Center's research is accessible and meaningful to multiple publics. It will position the Center as a creative guide into the dynamic space of shared and collaborative learning, with plans to establish a Minor in Art and Social Justice. This position reports to the Senior Director/Chief Curator of the Vera List Center.
This is a part-time position, 4 days per week with a set amount of hours. This position is funded by and contingent upon external fundraising.
- Conceptualize, develop, and implement a comprehensive, strategic publishing profile for the Center, integrating its digital and non-digital initiatives and ensuring accessibility to diverse publics in New York and online throughout the world. - Build out the distributed learning capacities of the Center's programming, with particular focus on the Open Campus-style Vera List Center Seminar, open to the public and enrolled students; on social media including podcasts; and on the Center's publishing initiatives, leading to the establishment of a Minor in Art and Social Justice at the VLC. - Provide editorial direction and support to all aspects of the Vera List Center's publishing initiatives including its print and online publications, social media, event programs, documentation, archive, and the public VLC Seminar class. - Draft, write, edit, and proofread texts for different audiences and readers, pertaining to all aspects of the Vera List Center activities, in collaboration with VLC staff. - Provide editorial direction and support to all marketing and public relations communications, including email announcements, press releases, targeted mailings. - Direct the Center's social media activities, in collaboration with VLC staff. - Provide editorial support for the Vera List Center's development and fundraising campaigns. - Supervise publication production, including timelines, design, permissions, submission deadlines, and distribution. - Perform additional tasks as assigned.
- Exceptional writing skills, with well-established practice of writing with ease for different purposes and readers, including higher education, marketing, and development work. - Experience in creative and critical engagement with digital and non-digital media platforms to advance learning and collective experiences. - Successful track record of conceptualizing organizational goals and developing strategies to achieve them. - Passion to engage with diverse communities from different kinds of backgrounds and levels of expertise. - Ability to work well under pressure, meet deadlines, problem-solve, and to work both independently and in team-based settings. - Excel at organizational tasks, detail-oriented, and meticulous. - Bachelor's Degree. - Three to five years of experience working in writing, editing, publishing, education or a related field.
- Long-standing track record of commitment to social justice and diversity initiatives. - Track record in successful grant applications. - Experience working in cultural, non-profit organizations. - Master's Degree in Nonfiction Writing, Journalism, English, Pedagogy, or related field. Extensive experience in journalism, publishing, and education.
