The American Academy of Periodontology is a professional association that represents approximately 7,500 periodontists, specialists who treat gum disease and other oral health conditions and place dental implants. The Senior Manager, Marketing and Communications serves as an integral member of the Membership, Marketing, and Communications (MMC) Department and reports to the Associate Executive Director - Membership, Marketing, and Communications. This individual develops and oversees marketing, branding, and member communications efforts to promote AAP initiatives, events, and products; and manages Academy communications efforts including public relations, awareness activities targeted towards key audiences such as consumers, general dentists, and dental hygienists, and executive communications such as speech writing and officer correspondence. The Senior Manager, Marketing and Communications also supervises the Marketing Specialist as well as other marketing and communications freelancers and/or vendors.
Marketing and Branding (20%):
Develops and deploys integrated marketing strategies for AAP products, services, and events, including membership benefits, continuing education opportunities, and publications.
Serves as gatekeeper for all marketing initiatives and works with interdepartmental staff and marketing vendors, as appropriate, to identify objectives, budgets, and timelines.
Develops, monitors, and reports on key performance indicators and metrics for all marketing initiatives.
Ensures that marketing efforts align with the AAP brand.
Proactively identifies and secures opportunities to elevate the Academy brand in front of strategic audiences.
Member Communications (20%)
Acts as Editor for Periospectives member magazine by determining quarterly issue theme and article line-up, overseeing production, and drafting and editing content as needed.
Contributes content to and edits electronic member communications vehicles as needed, such as the monthly e-newsletter, member-facing social media, targeted e-grams, and perio.org.
Drafts and edits print member communications pieces as needed including letters, brochures, and advertisements.
Public Relations (20%):
Identifies and researches mediagenic periodontal health topics that will resonate with target audiences and raise awareness of periodontics and the role of the periodontist.
Oversees the Academy's public relations program including press release distribution, media relations, and interview coordination.
Serves as point-of-contact for and manages relationships with public relations and communications vendors.
Coordinates spokesperson training for President and President Elect, and other Academy leaders as needed.
Awareness Activities (20%):
Produces patient education materials and other consumer-facing content, including brochures, web copy, social media posts, and videos.
Works with relevant staff to support awareness activities targeted towards general dentists and dental hygienists, and other allied health care professionals as appropriate.
Manages and acts as staff liaison to committees that support AAP's public and professional awareness programs.
Executive Communications (15%):
Drafts speeches, presentations, and other remarks for Academy leaders ensuring alignment to Academy messaging while capturing individual voice.
Prepares correspondence and other written material from Academy leaders including letters, electronic communications, and bylined articles.
Provides communications support to the Executive Director, as needed.
Required Education and Experience:
Bachelor's Degree (B.A. or B.S) from a four-year college or university in communications, journalism, marketing, or a related field
5+ years of Marketing or Communications experience required
Experience supervising junior staff preferred
Membership association experience preferred
Superior writing, proofreading, and editing skills required
Creative and critical thinking ability required
Proficiency in Microsoft Office required
Strong understanding of social media platforms and best practices preferred
Experience in web content management systems such as WordPress preferred
Strong capability to work effectively with others and assist others at critical points in the workflow
Demonstrated ability to manage numerous projects simultaneously and adhere to stringent production schedules required
Superb organizational skills and sound decision-making ability required
