Bachelor's degree and related experience; OR a combination of education and related experience totaling more than 4 years.
Experience in various aspects of horse production particularly previous foaling experience and expert horsemanship skills. Experience in training and supervision of employees and/or documented teaching experience. Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Science, Equine Science or related field. Additional years of industry experience. Valid driverâs license. Demonstration of proficiency in management of broodmare and foal health. Familiarity with standard horse herd health including but not limited to monitoring schedules of nutrition, vaccination, deworming, hoof care. Demonstrated experience showing strong time management and organization. Equine reproductive management skills such as the ability to palpate and inseminate mares, collect and process stallion semen. Client care skills. Understanding of breed association standards for reports of mares bred and foal registration. Familiarity with marketing of race horse prospects as well as western pleasure and hunt seat prospects. Experience with use of a pickup and trailer for transporting horses including mares and foals. Experienced in the support of public relations and communication/outreach of a program Experience with clerical work (billing, deposits, contracts, medical records, client communications, marketing, etc).
The Department of Animal Science https://www.ans.iastate.edu/ at Iowa State University is seeking an Assistant Horse Farm Manager to support the management of the Iowa State University Horse Teaching Farm https://www.ans.iastate.edu/equine-farm and assist in teaching equine laboratories as needed. This is a unique opportunity for an ambitious, energetic, self-motivated and intelligent person. Equine teaching laboratories include Equine Reproduction Lab, Equine Behavior and Training and Practicum in Safe Horse Handling and Welfare plus guest teaching opportunities in other courses. Management would include oversight of horse herd health cae, foaling and reproductive management.
Some holiday, night and weekend work will be required.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
Maintain supplies and orders farm supplies.
Clerical work (billing, deposits, contracts, medical records, client communications, marketing, etc).
Performs data entry and labeling.
Oversight of daily student employee performance and student employee training and scheduling.
Investigates and resolves common farm issues with minimal guidance.
Attending foaling during the spring semester.
Support public relations and communication/ outreach.
Responds to telephone and email inquiries regarding the farm, student opportunities, tours, and similar information requests.
Follow all Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) guidelines and Standard Operating Procedures.
ISU Equine Herd
The Department of Animal Science manages Iowa State Universityâs 50 horse herd plus seasonal client owned mares and foals. The Iowa State University horse herd is comprised of Quarter Horse and Thoroughbred broodmares, foals, yearlings and stallions. The Animal Science Teaching Farms are utilized by over 1,700 students per academic year for various hands on labs and teaching activities. The farm also hosts multiple tours each week to groups from local communities, alumni, perspective students, international visitors and other outside entities.
This is s fixed term appointment, All accrued vacation must be used during term of appointment or will be forfeited.
The University is in the process of implementing a new classification and compensation structure. The impending change is expected to be completed by Fall 2020. Any P&S employee hired through this posting may be assigned a new title and associated pay grade upon the employment start date (and after the initial offer), commensurate with qualifications required for the position. The duties and responsibilities of the posted position, in addition to compensation offered, will not be affected by this process.
