Hiram College invites applications for a Graduate Assistant within the Sports Information Department. The successful candidate will serve a two-year assistantship, assisting in the day-to-day operations of the office which serves the Athletic Department’s 10 sports and 18 teams. Hiram College is a member of the North Coast Athletic Conference and NCAA Division III.
The position includes the following: room, board, a living stipend of $5,000.00, and a tuition waiver to enroll in the Master of Arts Degree in Interdisciplinary Studies at Hiram College. The anticipated start date is August 1, 2020.
Responsibilities: Reporting to the Director of Sports Information and the Director of Athletics, the Graduate Assistant’s duties include, but are not limited to, the following: •Assist with all aspects of media and sports information relating to the college’s intercollegiate sports •Coordinate the internal and external communications of the Athletics Department •Assist in the day-to-day operations of the Sports Information office •Write press releases, game recaps, and feature stories for assigned sports •Daily website maintenance and graphic design •Serve as the primary contact for specific Hiram College’s NCAA Division III programs while aiding in the coverage of other in-season teams •Conduct all aspects of pre-game, in-game, and post-game coverage for assigned home contests and perform assorted game-day duties, such as public address announcing, play-by-play broadcasting, stats assorted game-day duties, such as public address announcing, play-by-play broadcasting, stats, (NCAA Live Stats, StatCrew or Presto Stats), social media coverage, and scoreboard operation. •Ensure accurate statistics for all home games •Organize, direct, and supervise event staff for the functions of taking statistics •Exchange sports information with other institutions with whom we compete •Help coordinate all game management, including hiring, training, and assigning student workers, interns, and volunteers •Promote Hiram athletics through social media including Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram, as well as any local, regional, and national media •Other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications: • A Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, public relations, sports management or another related or relevant field is required. • Excellent written and verbal communications skills • Highly-proficient computer skills including desktop publishing, internet website maintenance (Presto and SIDEARM Sports), Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Office, StatCrew, Presto Sports, and NCAA Live Stats statistical software packages. • Experience dealing with the media on the local, regional, and national level is preferred, but not required. • Candidate must be able to work extended and irregular hours including evenings and weekends, and be able to be on the field, court, and pool deck to record and report statistics, announce games, etc. • General journalism experience is preferred. • Experience with social media, graphic design and digital media is preferred. • Exceptional attention to detail, well-developed interpersonal skills, and ability to develop and maintain positive relationships with all persons regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, religious beliefs, and physical challenges. • The candidate must demonstrate the ability to work collaboratively within a team-oriented office environment and interact in a positive manner with students, faculty, staff, visitors, and the public. • Admission into the Master of Arts Degree in Interdisciplinary Studies Program is a requirement for consideration for this position.
