The Vice President for Development is a valued member of the Hospital’s Executive Leadership Team, reporting to the Hospital’s President and CEO and working closely with executives and Board members who are actively engaged in supporting the philanthropy program. With overall responsibility for meeting the Development program objectives and fundraising goals, the Vice President will further shape and execute the newly established Foundation that calls for a significant increase in the number of loyal donors and gift income, participating in the recruitment of Foundation Board Members. The Vice President for Development will also serve as the Foundation's Executive Director. In that role, he/she will assume overall responsibility for the establishment and execution of philanthropy, and for the active participation of the Foundation Board in identifying, cultivating, and soliciting major gifts. The Vice President will further engage high potential community members, donor constituent groups, physicians, and leaders in the development effort in collaboration with the Foundation Board. The overarching strategy focuses on engaging individuals with high wealth capacity, and utilizing planned giving and major gift strategies as the primary means for enhancing the newly established Foundation and securing funds in support of the Hospital’s capital improvement plan. While reporting to the CEO of South County Health, the Vice President works closely with the Foundation Chair and the Board. The annual evaluation of the Vice President will include the views and perspectives of the Foundation leadership.
South County Health is in the silent phase of a six-year, $15 million comprehensive campaign in support of the endowment, capital, and annual funds.
Be personally responsible for creating and stewarding relationships with high potential individuals committed to supporting the System’s philanthropic needs;
Carry and execute on a continually refreshed and updated prospect and donor portfolio of 25-30 people;
Conduct face-to face gift solicitations, in partnership with appropriate people, on an ongoing basis in order to meet annual and campaign fundraising objectives;
Guide and support the Trustees and the CEO in developing and fostering relationships with individuals with the means and willingness to support the System philanthropically;
Train and motivate Trustees, physicians and other supporters to solicit donations to the System;
Update the Strategic Development Plan, in conjunction with the newly formed Foundation and Executive Leadership on an annual basis;
Maintain and develop an Annual Development Operating Plan that sets the specific tactics and goals for development for the fiscal year, including the role of events, toward addressing different fundraising and stewardship objectives (this document will be incorporated in the System’s Annual Operating Plan);
Review and evaluate the Development team’s roles and responsibilities, and re-engineer the staffing plan as needed to achieve the short and long-term objectives of the Development Plan and the emerging needs of the System;
Monitor and evaluate the performance of the Development team and provide leadership and guidance to them in order to achieve department wide objectives;
Coordinate Development efforts with Marketing and Public Relations initiatives to ensure that all messaging supports the System’s philanthropic goals;
Create the information technology infrastructure in a manner that is integrated with the System, to support the development goals;
Provide input to Executive Leadership on the overall direction of the System, with priority emphasis on the identification of new areas that would be attractive for philanthropic support; and
Plan and ensure the flawless execution of community and major fundraising events in support of South County Health’s mission, to include the Annual Meeting and Gala.

Possessing high energy and integrity, the successful candidate will be a creative and optimistic thinker with excellent leadership and communication skills, and accomplished in producing results in a resource-efficient environment. Demonstrated experience and success in leading a comprehensive capital campaign and raising money for a Foundation required. Candidate for this position must possess a Bachelor’s Degree (master’s preferred) and 5 - 7 years documented success directing a high performing fundraising program in a healthcare, academic or human services institution. Planned giving background and CFRE preferred.
Success characteristics include:
-Senior level leadership experience directing a successful, highly functional development program, with thorough working knowledge of all aspects of high performing philanthropy programs. Candidates must have an established track record in major gifts solicitation, department building or reorganization and involvement with multi-million dollar capital campaigns.
-Demonstrated working experience with fundraising success in an organizational Foundation structured as the philanthropic support for the organization. This includes, but is not limited to, the raising of funds, strategic and engaging working relationships with the Foundation Board, and the ability to articulate the purposes and the outcomes of the Foundation to major prospects and existing donors.
-Executive presence with exceptional interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills. Candidates must be able to effectively articulate the mission, strategic vision and values of South County Health to a wide range of internal and external constituents. The right candidate will have a strong sense of conviction and loyalty to donors and the institution and be committed to maintain long-term relationships and ensuring that all constituents are well served.
-Strong interpersonal and resource management skills. Candidates must have the ability to develop rapport and strong working collaborations with colleagues at all levels, superb diplomacy skills, and be amenable to a variety of perspectives. They must be capable of integrating the Development functions within the organization to achieve cooperative and supportive relationships with clinical and administrative division leaders.
-The ability to leverage contacts with members of the board, medical staff, administration and community in order to advance the mission, visibility, and fund raising potential for the Healthcare System. Candidates must be able to assess the philanthropic community with accuracy and grace, identify and cultivate new sources of support, and create new alliances for the Healthcare System.
