Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Director of Communications for The Office of University News and Media Relations. This position reports to the Senior Director of News and Media Relations in University Communications and Marketing. The Director of Communications is a key member of the universitywide News and Media Relations team focusing on issues management communications. The position helps lead the university's crisis and emergency communications activities and works with other department communicators to elevate the reputation of the university and advance the strategic priorities of the President, universitywide boards and central administrative units.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
Engages with university leaders and subject-matter experts to develop and execute communications plans, messaging, and media responses on key university issues.
Coordinates coverage and promotion of governing boards, and universitywide activities including, but not limited to, University Commencement.
Works collaboratively with other department and university staff to disseminate important information through the proper communications channels.
Develops, creates, and edits content for UCM channels. Provides guidance or training on communications best practices and informs on university policies.
Works independently with chancellor-level communications teams and university senior leaders on issues management, emergencies, crises and other local media issues.
Serves a critical role in setting and implementing external strategies to address, manage, and communicate on current, emerging, or key universitywide issues.
Serves as a university spokesperson.
Minimum Education and Experience:
Bachelor's degree in a related field or and equivalent combination of education and experience.
A minimum of five (5) years of experience in media relations, communications or a related field.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Must be a strategic thinker, proven problem-solver and collaborator who is calm under pressure and can handle multiple priorities confidently, diplomatically and decisively under stress.
Trust, integrity, sound news judgment, and a collaborative approach are required qualities for this position.
Experience working with news reporters, issues management and acting as a spokesperson.
Sharp editing and excellent writing skills as well as attention to detail and experience working in content management systems.
Use of personal vehicle in order to travel for business demands; a valid driver's license would be required for this position.
Advanced knowledge of managing complicated issues within a large and complex organization.
Deep understanding and background in issues management.
Experience handling issues management and media relations in a large, complex organization preferred.
Daily editorial experience and journalism background a plus.
Drupal experience a plus.
Use of university computers, tablets, cell phones and mobile devices are required.
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
Will be on call during early morning hours, evenings, weekends and holidays.
May be required to work from home or from other off-site locations.
