University of Maryland, Baltimore Editor, Office of Communications and Public Affairs
An exciting opportunity exists at the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) for an Editor who is a team player, skilled in all facets of writing/editing, from long takeout stories to tweets and 250-character Elm Weekly items. Flexible, ability to edit/write quickly to meet deadlines yet maintaining high editorial standards, able to juggle multiple projects at the same time, the successful candidate will work with in-house writers/editors, graphic designers, the web and marketing team as well as freelancers on print and electronic projects, including social media. Additional skills, such as photography and videography, are welcomed. The editor/writer will coordinate with other communications professionals on campus to provide editorial direction for a variety of University-supported publications, helping ensure the consistency of messages at UMB.

Assist assistant director of editorial services in managing publications for UMB's schools of Dentistry, Law, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, and Social Work, units within the University such as Academic Affairs, Parking and Transportation, Philanthropy, and Public Safety, to name a few, in addition to various Universitywide projects for the Office of the President, including Founders Week, commencement, and the President's monthly newsletter.
Assist in managing day-to-day editorial process of alumni publications, from creating a production schedule in the beginning to proofing bluelines from the printer at the end
Edit and write news and feature stories, marketing copy, web copy, and more for UMB News, The Elm, and other vehicles, covering the wealth of speaker series and events offered at UMB.
Work at all stages in the production process, from concept through layout and printing
Copy edit news releases and web stories for the media team
Help maintain and enforce the University's editorial and graphic standards
Perform other duties as assigned.
Education: Bachelor's degree in relevant field (journalism, mass communications). Master's degree is welcomed but not required. Experience in higher education preferred but not required.
Experience: Three (3) years of experience in media relations, public relations, or journalism, preferably in an academic setting, or equivalent.
Other: May consider a combination of directly related experience and education.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Ability to edit and write for various audiences (e.g. researchers, senior staff, prospective students, government officials, web, general audiences)
Extensive knowledge of Associated Press style
Excellent client service and client education skills (talented team player who works well with others)
Ability to establish goals, prioritize, and work well under pressure; handle multiple projects simultaneously and on deadline; fact-check and source articles from manuscript through final publication
Eye for editorial accuracy, grammar, style, and usage
