Pinecrest Academy is seeking a highly qualified, enthusiastic, motivated individual to serve as Director of a band program across grades 4-12. The successful candidate will possess the ability to direct and/or lead band at the lower, middle and high school level. The Director of Bands will be a Christian who inspires students to learn the knowledge, skills and subject matter of instrumental music, contributing to their formation as Christians, consistent with the teachings of the Catholic Church and Pinecrest Academy’s vision and mission statements. He/she will represent the band program within the community and provide administrative and technical support to the administration as needed. The Director of Bands reports to the Head of School.
Models virtuous behavior in accord with the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church.
Teaches instrumental music, and other general music courses including AP Music Theory.
Coordinates program components, support needs and materials (e.g. negotiating contracts with vendors, reserving space, etc.).
Promotes the band program for the purpose of forming students holistically in a Catholic worldview, improving the quality of student performance outcomes, and encouraging maximizing their God-given talent.
Monitors band services (e.g. evaluating programs and attendance, reviewing staff, overseeing equipment procurement, staffing, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring that performance outcomes are achieved within budget, department, and school objectives.
Develops long- and short-term plans/programs (e.g. identifying school-specific support needs; outlining band program; integrating adopted curriculum; staffing, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring that school objectives are achieved.
Monitors fund balances of program and related financial activity for the purpose of ensuring that expenses are within budget limits and/or fiscal practices are followed.
Collaborates with internal and external sources (e.g. principals, area performing arts groups, vendors, colleagues, curriculum director, etc.) for the purpose of developing curriculum/course modifications, implementing and maintaining services and/or programs and serving as a liaison and information/process resource.
Responds to inquiries of students, parents, other school personnel, community representatives, etc. for the purpose of providing information, assistance and/or direction regarding the program and student activities.
Prepares a variety of materials (e.g. plans, budgets, funding requests, reports, analyses, recommendations, procedures, etc.), documenting activities and issues, meeting compliance requirements, providing audit references, making presentations, and/or providing supporting materials for requested actions.
Performs departmental administrative functions (e.g. assists with hiring, counseling, training, supervising, evaluating, monitoring budget, developing procedures, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining necessary staffing, enhancing productivity of staff, and ensuring that necessary outcomes are achieved.
Maintains a variety of detailed records (e.g. equipment and supply inventory; contract documents; evaluation forms and tabulations, correspondence, memos, etc.) for the purpose of meeting program reporting requirements.
Works independently under broad organizational guidelines to achieve departmental and school objectives; managing a department; and responsibly managing funds.
Performs other related duties, as assigned, for the purpose of ensuring an efficient and effective formative environment for students and work environment for peers.
The Director of Bands direct reports include Lower and Middle School Band Teacher.
The Director of Bands should meet the following qualifications:
Education: Master’s degree in Music Education required from an accredited college or university with major course work in music education emphasizing instrumental music.
Professional License/specialized training: State certification or certification eligible (GA) preferred.
Experience: Demonstrable past experience building a successful instrumental band program in an independent school, and five years of administrative experience leading a band program.
Practicing and informed Catholic in communion with the Holy Roman Catholic Church who knows and follows the precepts of the Church.
Evidence of a mature Catholic faith and lifestyle.
Adapting to changing work priorities.
Supporting student participation in local, regional, and national honor groups and competitions.
Organizing and communicating information for effective execution of the program.
Knowledge of principles, practices and procedures related to band programs; methods of planning and staging of productions; box office management; trip planning; bookkeeping principles; community support organizations and public relations; equipment used in performing arts; pertinent laws, codes, policies, and/or regulations; and safety practices and procedures.
Ability to schedule a significant number of activities, meetings, and/or events.
Independent problem solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans.
Must be able to adapt to frequent interruptions; meet deadlines and schedules; provide leadership, direction, and team building; set priorities; and work extended hours including evenings and/or weekends.
Must be fluent in music notation programs such as Sibelius and/or Finale, Digital Audio Workstations, and other music technology.
The specific responsibilities of the Director of Bands include, but are not limited to, the following:
Daily responsibilities: Oversee the entire instrumental music program. Conduct High School Wind Symphony,Middle School Symphonic Band, and assist with Lower School Bands.
Teach AP Music Theory and Music Appreciation.
Periodic Responsibilities – Trip planning, parent meetings, fundraisers, organize events (Annual Music of the Night), Adjudicate All-State/District Auditions for Middle and High School, recommend students for and attend honor band events. Purchase music, instruments, and supplies for the advancement of the program. Rearrange repertoire to accommodate instrumentation.
Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.
