The American Chemistry Council (ACC), a national trade association representing the world’s leading chemical and plastics manufacturers, currently has an opportunity for a Manager, Plastics Media Relations for its Plastics division. ACC represents its members on public policy issues; coordinates the industry’s research and testing programs; and administers Responsible Care®, the industry’s environment, health, safety and security performance improvement initiative.
The position is responsible for managing the Plastics Division’s interactions with reporters and producers across a variety of news outlets for the Division’s national strategic outreach and repositioning initiative. This manager will work with the Division’s subject matter experts and other ACC staff, consultants, the Division’s communications/public affairs vendor, and allied organizations to identify opportunities, conduct outreach, and prepare information (in writing or via interview) to place the Plastics Division’s points of view in news and consumer media on relevant topics. This position will develop placement strategies and relationships with reporters, editors and news outlets, and reports to the Senior Director, Plastics Outreach and Public Affairs.
Other key duties and responsibilities of the position include developing and executing strategies to educate reporters, pitch story ideas, write/place articles, and secure interviews in relevant news coverage aligned with the initiative’s plans and strategies; managing media relations for the initiative, collaborating with the Division’s communications/public affairs vendor and the initiative work teams; creating, editing and managing content/assets that encourage story placement and/or inclusion of initiative content and messages in news; and monitoring, responding to and measuring ongoing media coverage on initiative issues and opportunities.
Required qualifications include a Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism or related field and at least 5 years’ experience in communications, issue advocacy, media relations or relevant field. Demonstrated research and editing skills, experience working with print or broadcast media and with social media platforms, online targeting, and engaging with online stakeholders are a must.
