System lead for all Infection Prevention and Epidemiology programs for all MHC facilities and affiliates. Responsible for establishing and maintaining the quality standards for the work of all Munson Healthcare (MHC) facilities and affiliates in collaboration with physician, quality, and infection prevention leadership at each site.
Responsible for establishing a proactive process to acquire information needed to successfully mitigate external and internal threats associated with infectious agents. Takes lead on setting the priorities and organizing the work of Infection Prevention and Epidemiology (IPE) in partnership with system quality, clinical, and physician leaders. Works collaboratively with the leaders to identify and manage system-wide Infection Prevention and Epidemiology (IPE) and to assure compliance with established standards of care and regulatory requirements related to infection prevention.
This position will lead management of all outbreaks and epidemiologic events at MHC and its affiliates in collaboration with site experts.
Under the direct supervision of the Munson Healthcare Vice President of Quality and Safety. Has authority as “Infection Prevention Officer” to assure the organization’s compliance with best practice standards and regulatory requirements. May report directly to the CEO and other administrators in regards to infection prevention issues. Works closely with Medical Director of Infectious Disease.
May report directly to the Medical Staff Leadership of each system entity, as well as to performance improvement and accreditation compliance committee leaders.
Directly supervises and coordinates the work of Munson Medical Center Infection Prevention Department staff with matrix reporting of all Munson Healthcare system Infection Prevention staff.
AGE OF PATIENTS SERVED
No direct clinical contact with patients. May be required to perform limited patient assessment of all ages to determine presence of nosocomial infection and/or communicable disease to advise on isolation requirements. Identifies age related differences within the persons served and adjusts treatment style and expectations as appropriate, including adjustments based on cognitive function, learning ability, religious and cultural needs, and preferences.

Provides administrative leadership for (IPE) teams. Serves as system lead for all IPE staff at the local level, providing matrix leadership to the local programs. Serves as resource and lead for infection prevention related activities, working with site quality directors for prioritization of infection preventionists’ tasks.
Identifies and organizes system priorities into work plans for IPE based on scientific evidence, current literature, CDC/NHSN communications, regulatory requirements, internally identified risks, and identified opportunities to improve work flow.
Designs and manages work flow for all NHSN/CMS reporting, including translation of specifications, communication and training of surveillance efforts, optimization of work via improved IT support, establishing timelines and deadlines to ensure timely submission for CMS deadlines. Maintains knowledge of current trends, developments, and techniques of surveillance, prevention, and control of infections or other related concerns.
Assures maintenance of comprehensive IP surveillance systems (including infection detection, data collection and analysis, monitoring, measuring, and evaluation of preventive interventions (for both patients and healthcare personnel) in order to identify potential infection prevention risks or communicable disease problems at all location/services. Tracks incidence of hospital-acquired infections (HAI), performs necessary epidemiological investigations, reports to appropriate customers, and facilitates implementation of necessary control measures.
Leads or facilitates progress of any system-wide work groups that are working together to share best practices related to HAIs, Hand Hygiene, and other infection prevention and control efforts as identified. Gathers and analyzes data, prioritizes initiatives, and applies quality improvement methodologies to identify and make positive changes.
Gains and sustains comprehensive knowledge of the clinical capabilities of Munson Healthcare as well as thorough knowledge of system organization and department functions.
Has current knowledge and remains updated on all new infection prevention and control issues, external and internal. Streamlines educational and other learning across system related to infection prevention and control. Instructs or shares knowledge with others so they learn and develop skills needed to achieve objectives.
Maintains current knowledge of relevant federal, state and local regulations and ensures that the system leaders are informed of appropriate issues. Understands and complies with infection control, safety and OSHA procedures and regulations. Monitors for and ensures compliance. Supports survey activities as necessary.
Assures active participation by Infection Prevention representation on appropriate quality and safety committee meetings, as well as those conducted by key clinical groups, taking the lead and/or providing input/ support for any IPE-related topics. Participates on committees involving quality, leadership, environmental safety, clinical safety, medical staff, corporate teams and others as appropriate. Provides infection prevention reports to oversight committees as requested.
Leads/facilitates the Infection Prevention Committee, assuring active participation of key infection prevention stakeholders.
Has oversight responsibility for educational programs pertaining to infection prevention, for all personnel either directly or indirectly involved in patient care. Coordinates educational efforts with Staff Development and CME departments.
Writes orders for cultures, for the initiation and discontinuation of isolation precautions, and for appropriate labs to confirm or follow exposures or outbreaks, per established policy/procedure and direction of the Medical Director of Infection Prevention.
Serves as system lead for developing and updating IPE policies and procedures.
Supports ongoing efforts related to antimicrobial stewardship.
Serves as liaison for Munson Healthcare and State and County Public Health Departments. Has responsibility for reporting communicable diseases to appropriate agencies as required by law. Acts as a resource to the community concerning education in infection preventions and related topics, in cooperation with Corporate Communications and hospital administration.
Creates the structure necessary for projects to be completed on time and within budget; manages and communicates with project teams and stakeholders to achieve desired results.
Collaborates with department members, Medical Director, and VP to develop short-range plans and long-range strategies for the department – including annual departmental goals, development and monitoring of approved operating, FTE, and capital budgets.
Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Master’s Degree in Epidemiology, Nursing, Public Health, Environmental Health, Health Sciences, or comparable area of study.
Certification in Infection Control & Epidemiology (CIC) from the Certification Board of Infection Control & Epidemiology, Inc. preferred.
Minimum of five to seven years of progressive experience in infection prevention and control, including program leadership responsibility, and/or surveillance, data management, policy/procedure development, survey preparation and participation, working knowledge of Joint Commission, OSHA/MIOSHA, MDHHS, and other regulatory standards as they relate to infection control; including experience managing / leading infection prevention and control staff.
Maintains membership in appropriate recognized professional organization. Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest in field of expertise. Demonstrates an ongoing commitment to learn.
This position requires technical knowledge of hospital applications data-query software, ability to utilize and/or create databases, Windows-based word-processing documents, spreadsheets and report-generating software, presentation programs and other software relevant to the job. Must be knowledgeable regarding CDC NHSN data and interpretation. Possesses demonstrated proficiency in applying research evidence towards clinical decision-making.
