Summary of Position: The University of Minnesota BioTechnology Institute (BTI) is looking for a graphic designer-illustrator to support its communications team. The position involves the creation of explanatory graphics, editorial design, digital media, and environmental signage. As a member of BTI’s communications and marketing team, the graphic designer will play a key role in advancing strategic priorities through print, digital communications, and event support. The person in this role works collaboratively with faculty, staff, and the communications director to create and maintain content and support events that advance the institute’s research mission.
Essential and Other Functions:
40%: Graphic design and layout of print publications, marketing collateral for science outreach initiatives, support materials for conferences and symposia, and social media campaigns Create overall design for promotional and editorial materials (print and digital) Creation of editorial and publishing schedules for websites and social media, working with technical and content providers to keep materials fresh, accurate, and up-to-date. Develop, site maps, monitor site analytics, and test usability of new web-based projects
35%: Illustration and explanatory graphics to support communications team in program and event marketing, science communication, and research support
15%: Event support and miscellaneous projects, as required
10%: Photography of events for web and social media distribution
Essential Qualifications • B.A. in Graphic Design or Illustration or related field plus 2 years professional experience, or six years combined equivalent education and experience • Strong illustration skills and experience • Strong design and typographic skills • Attention to detail, organization, and prioritization of tasks • The ability to switch between self-direction and supervised work • Experience working in a team environment • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite design programs (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign)
Preferred Qualifications: • Knowledge and interest in photography and editing techniques • Basic knowledge and interest in videography and editing techniques • Knowledge and experience with content creation and distribution across social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram) • Experience with web content management systems (e.g., Drupal, Wordpress) and Mailchimp • Photography and videography background • Self-starter: Ability to work without close supervision, evidence of self-initiative. • Higher education experience • Familiarity with AP Style
