The RIT Center for Public Safety Initiatives is a unique collaboration between RIT's Department of Criminal Justice, the City of Rochester, and the criminal justice agencies of Greater Rochester including the Rochester Police Department and Monroe County Crime Lab. Its purpose is to contribute to criminal justice strategy through research, policy analysis and evaluation. Its educational goals include training graduate and undergraduate students in strategic planning and policy analysis.
Please note: This is a part time position that requires some evening and weekend hours. Although the position is an RIT staff position in the Criminal Justice Department it is sited at the Public Safety Building in the City of Rochester.
The Gun Involved Violence Elimination Initiative shall provide a dedicated Community Engagement Specialist for the Project. The Community Engagement Specialist will be assigned to the project to complete the scope of work below. The Communications Engagement Specialist will be jointly supervised by MCAC and RIT Center for Public Safety Initiatives (RIT CPSI). It will be housed at both MCAC and at RIT under the supervision of the Principal Investigator at RIT, Dr. Irshad Altheimer, The GIVE Operations Director, Kayla Macano, and Operations and Command at RPD/MCAC. RIT CPSI shall coordinate with RPD on supervising, directing, assigning tasks and evaluating performance of the Crime Analyst and the Community Engagement Specialist.
The activities performed shall include, but not be limited to, the following:
Promoting GIVE internally and externally though presentations, literature, new media, and strategic marketing, while utilizing the GIVE Communications strategy.
Collecting procedural justice outcome measures for assessment including pre/post survey instruments, community feedback, and perception levels.
Coordinating with RPD's Community Affairs Bureau (CAB) to support engagement efforts following GIVE operational response.
Participating in community events, Operation TIPS (Trust, Information, Programs, and Services), Police Citizen Interaction Committees (PCIC), and additional outreach as scheduled by the RPD CAB.
Organizing GIVE-sponsored events during Gun Violence awareness month (June).
Working with Operations and Command to ensure that procedural justice measures are in place for all GIVE initiatives.
Managing finances for the purchase of material to support the communications strategy.
Liaisons with SNUG for community outreach.
Work alongside, and report to, the GIVE Director of Operations on all efforts and recommendations.
Required Minimum Qualifications
Associates degree or equivalent experience: Preferred in criminal justice, communications, sociology or similar, 2 years experience in community engagement, communications or criminal justice related efforts
