Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Media Relations Assistant for the Office of Communications and Public Affairs at the Cancer Institute of New Jersey.
Under direction of the Associate Director of Marketing and Communications the Media Relations Assistant is responsible for enhancing media/public relations program to elevate Rutgers Cancer Institute of New jersey identity. This position will draft press releases, media advisories, and blogs about the Cancer Center's faculty grants/achievements, programs and events.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
Drafts press releases, media advisories, and blogs on CINJ faculty grants/achievements, programs and events; Distribute to appropriate media outlets and upload content to press release distribution service 'Newswise,' and to Drupal-based media web platforms.
Assists Associate Director in developing CINJ scientific news, clinical news and human interest stories into press releases, media pitches, blogs or other media/public relations opportunities.
Monitors national/international cancer-related news and identify opportunities to promote CINJ-related programs and experts to targeted media outlets.
Cultivates relationships with print, broadcast and web media; Interact regularly with members of the media to present story ideas of interest to their particular audiences to ensure coverage and story placement for CINJ.
Assists Associate Director in responding to media queries; including during 'off hours' as needed.
Minimum Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s Degree in communications, public relations, journalism or in a related field.
A minimum of three (3) years of experience in healthcare media relations or public relations.
Prior reporting experience a plus. Experience and demonstrated track record of working with members of the media highly desirable.
Equivalent experience, education and/or training may be substituted for the education requirements.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Must possess exceptional writing skills, proof-reading and fact checking.
Must be able create biographical grids and media interview set-ups for oncology meetings.
Ability to set priorities, manage multiple projects simultaneously with good follow through is essential.
Outstanding interpersonal communication and leadership skills, creativity and the ability to function in a team environment.
Demonstrated knowledge of how to accomplish superior performance in a unionized environment is necessary.
An understanding of an academic environment is advantageous.
Working knowledge of the Oncology field strongly.
