The Staff Writer is the primary writer for the USC Price School of Public Policyâs Office of Communications.Â Position demands an experienced, prolific, and flexible writer who can deftly switch tone, length, and style of writing to suit various content needs, including news and feature stories, student recruitment materials, multiple monthly e-newsletters, website, social media, announcements, and more. Excellent editing and proofreading skills are a must, as is a keen sense of how to pitch stories to make them attractive to media outlets. Meeting deadlines is crucial, as is strong emotional intelligence and the ability to manage expectations with a firm but pleasant manner. The Staff Writer will also manage daily and monthly media monitoring reports, as well as ongoing content analysis reports.
This position reports to the Senior Director for Communications and External Affairs, but works closely with departmental leadership to ensure mutual alignment with institutional messages, themes and priorities. This position will interact daily with USC Media Relations, USC Price research centers and academic departments, faculty, staff, students, and alumni in order to promote the work and achievements of the Price School. Â
As part of a greater content strategy and working with tight deadlines, this position is responsible for:
Identifying, writing, and editing relevant, valuable articles and news stories.
Assists digital media team by providing copy for digital content, including website, social media, videos, and more.
Responsible for daily and monthly media monitoring, reporting, and data analysis that will inform our content and media relations strategy. Will manage our Cision account.
Serves as a positive, effective, and adaptive team member who is cross-trained and willing to take things on in a pinch.
Establishes and maintains appropriate network of professional contacts. Maintains currency with professional organizations and publications. Attends and participates in meetings, conferences, etc.. Represents the University, Price School, and Office of Communications to internal and external stakeholders.

Bachelorâs degree in English, journalism, communications or closely related field desired; Masterâs degree preferred.Â
Knowledge, Experience & Skills
3+ yearsâ experience in journalism, professional writing, or content generation preferably in an academic environment.
Exceptional reporting and writing/editing skills.
Familiarity with AP Style is required.
Extensive recent experience researching, writing, and editing of communications content in a higher education institution, public relations agency or closely related field, with the specific goal to instill pride and drive action/interaction.
Proven research and writing skills under pressure and demonstrated ability to meet deadlines.
Clear understanding of multichannel communication platforms.
Proven track record of managing integrated content campaigns.
Strategic thinker who has the ability to keep multiple projects moving forward simultaneously, while anticipating the future.
Excellent project management and organizational/operational skills.
