Description of Position: The Sustainability Communications Associate is responsible for the development, implementation, and assessment of sustainability communications and events in support of University sustainability goals and objectives. The incumbent works with staff, faculty, and students to advance sustainability practices, to institutionalize sustainability within the University, and to engage the University community in the work of sustainability through communications and events. The full-time position reports to the Director of Sustainability.
Salary range $35,200 to $40,200
Responsibilities: Content Development and Editing Work with student assistants to create articles, blogs, social media posts, graphics, videos, and other communications to advance sustainability plans and campaign goals. Review, edit, and provide feedback to student assistants on communications content.
Social Media and Website Oversee content and maintenance of It All Adds Up social media accounts and website.
Events and Outreach Coordinate sustainability participation at events and other outreach opportunities. Oversee, schedule, and train student staff and volunteers assisting at events. Present to University audiences about sustainability initiatives and serve as a guest presenter in sustainability-oriented courses.
Campaign and Brand Management Implement and continuously improve the University’s It All Adds Up sustainability campaign and brand directed at internal stakeholders and community members. Curate campaign assets, work with University operations departments to utilize those assets in their sustainability related communications, and amplify University departments sustainability content through It All Adds Up. Develop and implement annual It All Adds Up marketing campaigns for the Twin Cities campus.
Communications Planning Participate in the development of strategic sustainability communications plans for the operations sustainability program. Collaborate with other sustainability staff, University Relations, and technical, subject matter experts to create and implement communications plans for specific events, programs, and initiatives. Collaborate with function (e.g. dining, waste, transportation) subject matter experts and leaders, and communications professionals across University Services and other University divisions to ensure successful implementation of the strategic communications plan.
Assessment Propose metrics to evaluate the efficacy of sustainability communications. Track and report regularly on sustainability communications metrics.

Work Environment The work is performed in a general office setting. Regular travel to facilities and sites on the Twin Cities campus and other locations in the Minneapolis/St. Paul metro area. Occasional travel to other campuses in the University of Minnesota system. Position regularly works in the evenings at events and to attend meetings (~10% of time), and occasionally on weekends.
Minimum Qualifications: BA/BS degree in Communications, Journalism, Marketing, Art, Sustainability, or related field, or four years combined equivalent education and experience. Passion for sustainability and the ability to effectively champion sustainability to a wide array of audiences.
Preferred Qualifications: Advanced knowledge of current sustainability concepts, issues, trends, and best practices, particularly as they relate to higher education. Successful experience in higher education, governmental agency, or other complex organization with decentralized authority and influence. Familiarity with AP style, social media platforms, Drupal (or similar content management software), Microsoft Office, email marketing platforms (e.g., MailChimp, Constant Contact) and Adobe Creative Suite. Experience working with graphic designers. Experience in marketing, communications, event planning, and website design/maintenance. Experience evaluating the success of marketing and behavior change campaigns.
