International House is a 501 (c) 3 non-profit, self-supporting residential and community-oriented program center affiliated with the University of California Berkeley and located in the southeast quadrant of the Berkeley Campus. Since its founding in 1930 with a gift from John D. Rockefeller, Jr., it has housed more than 95,000 residents from over 75 countries annually, including two Governors of California and eight Nobel Prize laureates. Its mission is to foster intercultural respect and understanding among people throughout the world, across cultural, economic, and ethnic lines. I-House provides nearly 1,100 students and scholars from the United States and around the world with an opportunity to live and learn together during a typical 12 month cycle. I-House's rich array of programs serves the residents, the campus and local community.
About the Position: We are seeking a seasoned, multifaceted Executive Director. Since its inception, International House has had only five Executive Directors. We seek a highly engaged candidate who will share in accomplishing this vital mission. Necessary skills and qualities include strong management, leadership, public relations, fundraising skills, international experience and a passionate commitment to cross-cultural education and student development.
The Executive Director is the CEO and will maintain longstanding ties to other major International Houses around the world. He/she provides leadership and programming for some 1,100 students and scholars, guides 70+ career, over 100 student staff and rallies multiple thousands of alumni in the continued development of the International House. Approximately 50% of career employees are represented by unions. Reporting to an influential and supportive 30+-member Board chaired by the University Chancellor, the Executive Director oversees $35 million in assets plus annual operating, capital and restricted budgets of $17 million and a development program which raises $1.5 - $2 million per annum.
Some Key Responsibilities:
The Executive Director's responsibilities fall into the following main areas:
Direction, management and administration of a major residential center, including oversight of staff; overall fiscal, operational and financial responsibility; supervision of dining services, maintenance operations, information systems and technology, financial aid, events and rentals, the center for intercultural leadership (CIL) and residential and public programs. These duties are conducted through department heads but the overall responsibility for their success rests with the Executive Director.
Soliciting major gifts, promotion, development and representation of International House and its mission through relationships with the Board of Directors, staff and residents, the worldwide International House alumni, UC administration, campus academic units, the Bay Area community at large, including the media, and national and international organizations whose missions parallel that of International House.
Institutional planning and management for an institution that serves as an international and cultural center not only for the campus but also for the local community beyond the campus, leading and shaping a complex strategic planning process in a manner that reflects extensive Board, staff, resident and alumni participation.
Take a lead role, in collaboration with the Board, overseeing an exciting array of intercultural programs serving residents, the campus and local community. The Executive Director will also provide oversight for continuing renovations to International House's remarkable historic and architecturally distinct building.
The optimal candidate must have demonstrated governance, management and leadership skills, preferably in a setting that translates favorably to that of a major non-profit organization and educational institution of equivalent size and scope.
Demonstrated management skills in the areas of human resources and staff management and development, effective team building, facilities, operations and financial oversight including an understanding and knowledge of financial statements as well as accounting.
Strong skills in strategic planning and implementation, creativity in analysis, and ability to develop a cohesive vision are needed for this demanding, but extremely rewarding position.
Demonstrable background serving a non-profit Board of Directors with complex reporting lines and navigation of the multiple strands of connection with a major public university.
Managerial and leadership skills and ability to delegate in a complex, dynamic multi-cultural atmosphere are essential.
Ability to manage successfully in a union environment is important.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and ability to deal with ambiguity in a complex university environment.
Bilingual and multilingual candidates with international and multicultural understanding and work experience are preferred.
Advanced degree or equivalent experience preferred.
