The Cove School seeks a Director of Development who will lead the school’s philanthropic programs and marketing to engage leadership and donor support to fulfill the mission of the school.
Mission: The Cove School provides highly individualized education and life strategies for children with learning disabilities.
Situation: The current Director of Development has been at Cove for 5 years. The department currently has a full time Development Associate. A full time administrative assistant has been in place since 2002.
Cove raises approximately $950,000 each year in philanthropic revenue. The school is seeking to advance its efforts to include a Major Gifts program. Cove is looking to enhance the efforts that the department has in place so that maximum capacity can be reached.
Expectations of the Director of Development position:
Work closely with Cove’s Trustees, Executive Director, and staff to help them fulfill Cove School’s mission
Actively participate in trustee meetings to report on status and initiatives
Lead the development and implementation of strategic long-term and operational fundraising plans to ensure that Cove’s operating needs are met
Create and implement new planned giving and major gifts programs concurrent with growing the annual fund to meet increased operating needs.
Serve as Cove School’s major gifts officer including identifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding major gifts prospects
Manage and lead other development staff to meet the overall goals of the department
Coordinate and supervise all development activities including donor acquisition; prospect research; corporate, foundation, and government relations and grantsmanship; major gifts and lower level individual contributions; organization/civic giving and other sources, and stewardship activities. The Director should continually develop and implement creative programs for giving to the organization.
Support the Executive Director in her prospect management, ensuring her time is strategically utilized toward fund raising activities
Prepare and manage the development and public relations department budget and evaluate annually the effectiveness of development and public relations programs including cost analysis
Ability to lead a large capital campaign
Keep faculty/staff members informed of the status of fundraising activities, elicit their input, and encourage their participation in fundraising activities when possible
Oversee and direct recording and tracking of contributed income including the proper utilization and maintenance of donor software
Establish and maintain strong relationships with Board members, donors, prospects, the philanthropic community, and other relevant constituency groups
Staff the Development Committee, Marketing Committee, and other board committees as needed
Serve as primary contact for the Parent Association (PA), volunteers, and school administration, providing the necessary interface for philanthropic activities
Serve as an articulate, enthusiastic, and visible spokesperson for the organization
8-10 years of relevant experience
CFRE preferred, but not required
Staff management experience
Strong presentation skills
Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal skills
Strong community builder
Working knowledge of donor database programs
