Chair of the Art and Visual Culture Department (Associate or Full Professor)
Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:
The Department of Art and Visual Culture (AVC) in the College of Design at Iowa State University is seeking a dynamic and accomplished leader in the role of Department Chair, to support and promote a diverse array of art practices and theory, interdisciplinary, and collaboration. As a research institution, we seek a visionary in the field who embraces collegiality, community, and our unique land-grant university status by upholding and advocating for the impact of our work both on- and off-campus. Building on our long-standing achievement as a department of makers, educators, and scholars, the new department chair has the opportunity to inspire and create opportunities for knowledge-sharing, innovation, and entrepreneurship. This position begins on July 1, 2020, and is a full-time appointment at the rank of associate or full professor, with a standard additional month of salary support during the summer. The successful candidate will oversee a dynamic and collegial department comprised of thirty-four faculty members across the fields of Art History, Art Education, Scientific Visualization, and Studio Arts. The chair will be an advocate for the department in its relationship with allied programs, college and university administration, alumni, the profession, and the public while supporting all three dimensions of the land-grant mission: education, research/creative inquiry, and outreach. Candidates will be expected to demonstrate strength in strategic and fiscal planning, an ability to communicate effectively with diverse audiences, and an aptitude for fostering a culture of diversity and inclusivity. As an academic leader, the candidate should possess an in-depth knowledge of his or her field, demonstrate support and a passion for teaching and the arts, and exhibit an appreciation and respect for allied disciplines.Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â

The Chair is responsible for oversight of the budget, personnel matters, student recruitment, departmental governance, collaborative engagements, external relations, as well as central administrative operations of the department, including curricular development and teaching as well as assessment and accreditation.
Required Minimum Qualifications:
A terminal degree in studio art, art history, or related field
A record of achievement/excellence in teaching, scholarship, and/or professional practice Â
Significant recognition in one or more of the following areas: research, teaching, professional practice or outreach in art, art history, or a related field
Excellence in teaching at the college level
Experience in academic administration and/or supervisory experience, ideally including fiscal, negotiation, and personnel management
Â Evidence of successful grant writing, fund raising, and/or public relations

The Department of Art and Visual Culture promotes an engaged, diverse, and comprehensive learning environment in the visual arts. Our undergraduate and graduate degree programs prepare students to understand and develop their ability to impact social, cultural, and physical environments they are shaping and influencing. Exposure to historical and contemporary art movements combined with traditional and innovative studio skills and shared studio pedagogy, prepares undergraduate students with a basis in artistic thought and professional practice. We emphasize the strong observation and communication skills necessary for success in visual arts-related careers or advanced study.Our graduate program provides a supportive environment for individual artistic development. It promotes conceptual and technical education encouraging critical inquiry, excellence, an understanding of the history of art, and an experimental approach toward each media.
