Establishes vision and strategic direction for donor communications and messaging to support the University Development Office (UDO), includes Principal Gifts, International Advancement, Planned Giving, and Development Strategy (alumni affairs and development activity of the President and Provost). The Senior Director also oversees staff responsible for providing writing support to the Harvard Alumni Association (HAA).
Supervises the content strategy team that supports the University Development Office's engagement and solicitation efforts, with a focus on seven-figure-plus donors, including production of fundraising collateral, marketing materials, case statements, donor proposals, talking points, programmatic content, and gift opportunities. This team also develops the programs for university-level events and committees and identifies, recruits and briefs faculty speakers.
Supervises the donor relations team that supports the University Development Office's recognition and stewardship efforts, including stewardship reports, presidential acknowledgements and correspondence, custom mementoes for donors, financial reporting on endowed funds, individual stewardship plans, and significant gift announcements.
As a producer-manager, the Senior Director will not only manage, but will personally undertake work related to any of the activities described above.
Proactively develops deep content knowledge and serves as UDO's subject matter expert on a range of University academic programs and priorities, serving as a resource for partners throughout Alumni Affairs and Development. Ensures adherence to university messaging and encourages demonstration of Harvard's depth, breadth, and impact through exciting and inspiring stories. Builds partnerships with communication colleagues in the Harvard Alumni Association, Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS) Development, Harvard Public Affairs and Communications (HPAC) and at each of Harvard's Schools to ensure coordination and inclusion of university-wide messaging and content. At least ten years of relevant work experience
Experience in writing, content strategy, and content coordination
Superior writing, management, and communication skills
Demonstrated ability to communicate complex issues in a clear and compelling manner
Computer literacy, including proficiency with Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat tools
Experience working in development, marketing, or communications preferred
Experience working in higher education a plus
Flexibility and willingness to learn
Ability to hold sensitive information in confidence
Ability to work collaboratively, drive strategy, and consistently meet deadlines
Proven track record of effective staff management
Experience working with senior fundraisers preferred
Appreciation for the perspective of a donor/alumni audience
