About the Position
*This is a part-time (0.75 FTE) benefited position.*
The Director of Local and State Government Relations leads external and government relations for the university strategically and intentionally to the benefit of the faculty, staff, and students of San Jose State University. The director will facilitate engagement with community and government leaders to position San Jose State University as a good neighbor, a regional economic and cultural asset for Silicon Valley, and a thought leader for state and national issues.
The Director of Local and State Government Relations leads external and government relations at local and state (including city, county). The director works collaboratively with the Director of Advocacy and Government Relations to develop strategies for cultivating relationships with government officials at all levels, opinion leaders, and community neighbors and partners. The director advises senior leadership about emerging policy contexts that impact the effective functioning of the university. The director works closely with Strategic Communications staff to develop communication plans.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
Collaborate with the Director of Advocacy and Government Relations to develop a comprehensive, coordinated overall strategy for community and government relations.
Build and enrich relationships with elected officials of the City of San Jose and the County of Santa Clara, community partners and opinion leaders in the region, and area neighbors.
Engage directly with elected officials and their staffs to discuss public policy issues and legislation.
Work closely with other university divisions on compliance with local and state regulations and legal requirements.
Establish and execute legislative and regulatory strategies consistent with CSU and university priorities.
Coordinate and develop meetings and events with government, community and business partners consistent with other university initiatives and events.
Track policy at the City of San Jose and the County of Santa Clara.
Develop systems for regular communications with city and county elected officials.
Develop opportunities for university leadership to meet with city and county officials.
Develop and implement a communications and outreach strategy with the local, county, and state delegation.
Brief, advise, and staff the President and her Cabinet on local and state issues and policies that affect the university's programs, operations, and reputation. As needed, prepare talking points and briefings.
Support the CSU’s legislative priorities by disseminating research from Advocacy and State Relations, conducting outreach to senior leaders, and developing supporting correspondence as needed.
Organize key legislative and outreach events including the annual legislative dinner at the President’s residence, the alumni event at the State Capitol, and trainings for Associated Students.
