The position of Media Relations Specialist plays a crucial support role on the media relations team in the Office of Communications as it works to advance the University’s priorities through productive relationships with the news media. The Media Relations Specialist provides research, organizational, and operational support for the media relations team while embracing opportunities to contribute to broader messaging efforts. The position reports to the Deputy Vice President for Communications & University spokesperson, and to the Deputy Spokesperson.
The ideal candidate is detail-oriented with strong writing, organizational, and interpersonal skills; enthusiasm for a collaborative workplace; and, above all, a willingness to learn. The Media Relations Specialist must also be proactive and able to see tasks through to completion; have the ability to juggle multiple, often high-pressure deadlines; and possess an interest in news and media engagement.
Specific duties include:
- Tracking media coverage of the University and preparing a daily media report for University leaders
- Preparing a weekly email newsletter to the University community highlighting University news and priorities
- Researching and developing materials including messaging points, briefings and news releases and assisting with developing media outreach planning.
- Tracking and assisting with responding to incoming media requests including monitoring media relations email accounts.
- Coordinating media interviews and campus visits
- Maintaining and expanding media contact databases
- Supporting crisis response communications when necessary
- General administrative support
-At least two years of experience working in a public relations firm, news media company or equivalent professional environment.
-Associate of arts degree or higher.
-Excellent attention to detail.
-Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills in an environment with people from a variety of backgrounds.
-Moderate to advanced skills using PowerPoint, PhotoShop or equivalent presentation and photo/graphic editing software.
-Knowledge of and familiarity with higher education and Princeton University.
-Knowledge and familiarity with news media and social media platforms.
