The Leonard D. Schaeffer Center for Health Policy and Economics is one of the nationâs premier health policy research centers.Â Housed jointly in the School of Pharmacy and Price School of Public Policy at the University of Southern California (USC), its mission is to measurably improve value in health care through evidence-based policy solutions, research excellence, and private and public sector engagement.Â The Center achieves this mission through groundbreaking research and policy analysis in health economics, health services research, and pharmaceutical economics.Â
The Schaeffer Center comprises approximately 100 faculty and staff who collaborate on a wide array of research and policy questions.Â The Centerâs External Affairs group supports a sophisticated dissemination strategy to ensure Schaeffer Center research informs health policy. Â Through an ongoing collaboration with the Brookings Institution, the Schaeffer Center has developed an effective channel to disseminate its policy research in Washington DC. Â Research staff (directors, administrators, specialists) together with media and communications experts all ensure that research projects are shepherded effectively.Â The Center also supports a large programming staff and a data core with access to national survey data and large claims databases from public and private sources.Â
The Schaeffer Center seeks an experienced professional to oversee communications, events, and development in support of the Center mission. The Director, External Affairs reports to the Managing Director of the Schaeffer Center and will be responsible for developing and implementing a strategy for communications, branding, public relations, marketing, events, and fundraising.Â This is a full-time, two year fixed-term (renewable) position. This position requires an individual who is able to translate and disseminate policy research and analysis produced by Center experts to policy makers, media, and private sector leaders, firmly establishing the Center as a premiere resource for decision makers.
To optimize impact and outreach, the Director of External Affairs will also cultivate and maintain strategic relationships to further dissemination goals as well as engage with policy makers and thought leaders to identify potential policy issues that Center research informs.Â
Communications and events:
Establishes external affairs strategy to support Center mission and vision, and to promote key elements of the Schaeffer Center research agenda.Â
Demonstrates strategic vision in advancing the Schaeffer Center's mission.Â Performs near-term and longer-term business planning for external affairs and is responsible for execution of the business plan.
Directs communications plan to engender favorable media attention and promote the awareness of the Schaeffer Center brand within health policy community and broader media.Â
Oversees design, implementation and management of the Centerâs online presence, which includes social media platforms as well as the Center website.
Oversees the development of issue briefs and other reports based on Schaeffer Center faculty research products, such as white papers, op-eds, videos, infographics, data visualizations, etc.
Assists in the development and management of the Schaeffer Center Advisory Board including planning and execution of semi-annual board meetings.
Oversees planning and execution of all Schaeffer Center conferences.
Works collaboratively with Center management, Office of Research Advancement, University Advancement and other resources to identify fundraising opportunities and assist, as necessary, in the application process.
Manages and oversees fund stewardship by working with director, managing director, and development staff, and Finance and Research Administration Director to maintain donor relationships and produce reports.
Cultivates and maintains strategic relationships to further dissemination goals.
Engages with policy makers and thought leaders
Manages and maintains regular contact with Center Advisory Board
Represents university or department at professional meetings, conferences, seminars and other events.
Develops and maintains contacts with University officials, media representatives, community leaders and professional colleagues.Â
Maintains currency with professional organizations and publications.Â
Works collaboratively with Center director and managing director to contribute to annual strategic planning process and to develop annual plan for external relations.
Works collaboratively with Center faculty to produce annual report on accomplishments based on qualitative and quantitative metrics.
Applicants must have a successful track record in communications/public relations and have background in public health, health policy, or other health-related enterprise, public policy understanding and organizational management and implementation experience.
Minimum experience 5 years (10 years of management/supervisory experience preferred) in public relations, communications, journalism or related field. Combined education/experience as a substitute for minimum experience.
Competitive and commensurate with experience and qualifications.
