Overview The Department of Communication Studies at California State University, San Bernardino (CSUSB) invites applications from a diverse group of qualified applicants for an assistant professor position in Public Relations/Strategic Communication that begins in August 2020.
The Department of Communication Studies offers a B.A. in Communication Studies with concentrations in Media Studies, Public Relations, and Human and Organizational Communication; and an M.A. in Communication Studies. Students have many opportunities to explore all aspects of the field through our wide range of concentrations, minors, internship opportunities, events, departmental clubs, and advising. Dynamic and growing, we have one of the largest number of undergraduate majors of any department in the College of Arts and Letters.
California State University, San Bernardino (CSUSB) is located in San Bernardino in the Inland Empire, 60 miles east of Los Angeles and operates a satellite campus in Palm Desert located in Coachella Valley. CSUSB serves approximately 20,000 students, of which 81% are first-generation college students, and graduates about 5,000 students annually. As a designated Hispanic Serving Institution, CSUSB reflects the dynamic diversity of the region and has one of the most diverse student populations of any university in the Inland Empire, and the second highest Hispanic enrollment of all public universities in California. Typical Activities The successful candidate will teach courses in, but not limited to, media and public relations writing; mass communication and strategic communication fundamentals; and PR campaigns, tactics, and planning. The faculty member will teach mainly within the public relations concentration, which has more than 150 students. Qualified candidates must demonstrate a commitment to excellence in teaching and mentoring a diverse student population and to working effectively with faculty, staff and students across a wide range of disciplines.
In addition, new faculty are encouraged to develop and participate in activities that support the University's strategic plan. This plan emphasizes: a) student success; b) faculty and staff success; c) stewarding resources; d) community engagement and partnerships; and, e) enhancing the campus identity. Minimum Qualifications Terminal degree in Communication, Public Relations, Strategic Communication, or a related field by the time of appointment. Record of professional work in public relations/strategic communication. Record of excellent teaching at the college or university level of public relations, strategic communication, and/or related fields. Active research agenda in Public Relations/Strategic Communication. Experience working successfully with a diverse student population, including first generation and non-traditional students who come from diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds. Preferred Qualifications: Record of scholarship and/or strategic communication/public relations work which focuses on underrepresented groups, particularly Latinxs in the U.S., African Americans, and/or Native Americans. The ability to teach print and online journalism, nonfiction reporting and writing, and online journalism production, and our core theory class. Specialization in Latina/o/x bilingual (Spanish/English) Strategic Communication/Public Relations.
