Michigan State University is seeking a seasoned, independent, motivated advancement professional to plan, implement, build, develop and continually enhance constituent groups for the University that align with their shared interests. This role focuses on engaging specific constituent groups with the university in order to strengthen their relationship with MSU and to encourage philanthropic support. The role will assist with the management of donor prospects from the Parent and Family and Women and Philanthropy constituency programs. The University is interested in exploring and building out additional constituency groups: Alumni of Color, LGBTQ community, Entrepreneurs, etc.
Portfolio Management / Fundraising
Manage a portfolio of 100 donor prospects.
Assist with the management of donor prospects from the Parent and Family constituency program and the Women and Philanthropy constituency program.
Research alumni donors to identify, develop strategy for and cultivate potential planned and major gifts.
Coordinate with constituency-based development officers, regional major gift officers and gift planning advisors in the discovery, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of major gift prospects likely to support specific university programs and activities.
Develop proposals and gift agreements and coordinate with University Development staff in the presentation of proposals and gift agreements to major gift constituent prospects.
Establish direct or indirect contact with those major gift prospects having the greatest potential for support of university programs and activities to assure a level of mutual understanding conducive to support.
Maintain records and resource materials to assist in the cultivation of major donor prospects interested in the support of particular university programs and activities.
Plan and host campus visits for major gift prospects with faculty and university leadership as part of a strategic cultivation plan when required.
Program Management and Collaboration
Identify and work with data analytics to determine specific types of constituent groups based on alumni data and philanthropy interests.
Educate University Advancement colleagues on program purpose, goals and opportunities for collaboration.
Identify alumni donors to cultivate, engage and solicit to support constituent programs.
Partner with MSU Annual Giving Programs to outreach to targeted constituent programs, increase awareness and build donor base.
Create communication strategy for providing information to further build the constituency programs.
Develop promotional materials, transmittal letters and other supportive material required for discovery, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of various constituency audiences.
Serve as a vital member of the Special Constituencies and Talent Development team to support the Sr. Director of Individual Giving.
Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills
Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree in communications, public relations, marketing, business, nonprofit management or any other related field; three – five years of professional fundraising, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
An advanced degree and/or professional fundraising certification is preferred.
Five years plus of related and progressively more responsible or expansive experience in professional fundraising, public relations, marketing or related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Excellent writing and verbal communication skills.
Excellent interpersonal skills.
Experience in public speaking.
Collaborative team-oriented style.
Experience with “Moves Management” or related strategic relationship development.
Working knowledge of tax laws affecting charitable giving.
Travel is required throughout the year both in-state and out-of-state. Possession of a valid vehicle operator’s license.
