In addition, at the upscale hotel, over 200 Cornell students work alongside seasoned professionals, honing their skills across all hotel and restaurant operations. These future leaders will apply what they have learned at The Statler to some of the finest hotels, restaurants and resorts in the world. The General Manager of The Statler Hotel will provide the hospitality expertise, leadership, vision and operational direction which best ensures that the needs of the guests and clients of The Statler Hotel and Marriott Executive Education Center are anticipated and satisfied. They will employ all business theories, techniques and practices necessary in the competitive marketplace to demonstrate sound ethical management practices and long-term revenue and profit maximization. In addition, the General Manager acts as an ambassador welcoming trustees, Cornell distinguished visitors and many SHA alumni back to campus as a representative of the Hotel School. Most importantly, the successful candidate will provide an environment for SHA students to gain relevant experiential learning, leading to opportunities for them to supervise and manage Statler hotel operations, while developing appropriate soft skills to be successful in the hospitality industry. As such, the GM must maintain the hotel as a resource for the Hotel School, providing experiential learning for students. This would include providing students with proper training and exposure to industry best practices. This also involves the continual recruitment of new students at the start of three distinct employment periods: summer, fall semester and spring semester. Working with faculty to provide operation practicums to complement the SHA curriculum is critical. The GM should be available to speak in classes and make other management staff available for class presentations. They must also collaborate with faculty members who may wish to use the hotel for academic research purposes. Additional responsibilities include the following:
* Establish and administrate quality standards, policies and procedures for all operating departments. Work with the hotel directors to set quality goals and establish success criteria. Put measurement tools in place to gather guest feedback, measure success and respond to feedback. Maintain AAA Four Diamond ranking and top-level Trip Advisor ratings. Ensure day to day success of all hotel operations. * Formulate and administrate a profit-oriented budget, aggressive marketing, staffing and business plans which ensure both the satisfaction of the client's needs, the delivery of experiential learning and the property's financial goals. * Provide leadership in the professional competence of the management staff and the establishment of standards of performance of other supervisory and line staffs. Conduct annual performance evaluation of division heads. Monitor on a regular basis the performance of division heads in meeting operational and budgetary goals and approve annual salary adjustments for the hotel staff. * Oversee the Hotel Leadership Development Program (HLDP). Attract hotel students interested in operations and develop them in supervisory and management roles in the hotel. Engage these students as partners in hotel operation. Provide regular programming of outside speakers on a variety of topics. Plan and execute an annual trip for the students at the tops levels of the program. Maintain relations with alumni and other industry leaders to engage their interest in hiring HLDP students and providing support for the program. * Set pricing for both rooms and food and beverage, to maximize occupancy and revenue to the highest levels. This includes selling strategies for both rooms and food and beverage. Work with revenue management systems and revenue committee to yield market leader rates. * Work directly with the Sales and Marketing Director to maximize the sales effort to fill both group and transient rooms. Understand the unconstrained demand for transient rooms. Protect the annual needs for the SHA, JCB and special events such as graduation, Trustee events and reunion. * Develop an efficient human resources program and for effective labor management relations. This would include employee communication and recognition programs. Deal with complex human resource issues that arise. Involved as necessary in union grievances. Participates in union negotiations. * Oversee the physical plant and the repairs and maintenance budget and programs which ensure that the facilities are maintained. Conduct frequent inspections to identify repair needs and that the property is being maintained in a first-class manner. Establish a multi-year capital plan to identify renovations and updates needed in the hotel. * Conduct Executive Committee meetings, Operations meetings, Revenue meetings, Marketing meetings, and periodic all employee meetings. * Represent The Statler Hotel to the Cornell Community. Network and cultivate relationships with SHA alumni and industry leaders. Work collaboratively with Cornell AA&D, Hotel School AA&D, SHA Dean's office, Presidents and Provost Office and University Trustees office to accommodate and satisfy the many visiting dignitaries to campus that are of special interest. Greet and recognize the many prominent alumni staying in the hotel. Interact with SHA alumni who may wish to offer their ideas and suggestions to enhance the hotel.
* Mentor current students on a regular basis that are interested in hotel operations, entrepreneurial ventures and career advice. As requested, meet with prospective students and parents interested in Cornell and the Hotel School. * Advise the Hotel Ezra Cornell Board of Directors and other academic areas as requested by the dean of SHA. Works collaboratively with HEC to ensure the success of the weekend. * Ensure that the hotel is safe for both its guests and employees. This includes an active safety committee. Work to have flawless health inspections. Minimize vehicle accidents. Align the hotel with University goals for sustainability initiatives. Work for best practices in triple bottom line sustainability efforts including recycling, composting and energy conservation. * Interact with community leaders including Mayor, Tourism Board, Downtown Ithaca Alliance, Chamber of Commerce, BOCES and HETP. Involve the hotel in community/campus events to increase exposure of the hotel including Cornell Athletics, Ithaca Commons special events, and charitable events with demographics that align with the hotel. Community involvement as appropriate with management and line staff. * Select vendors for the hotel. Interact with vendors to ensure we are getting the best workmanship, price and service from the vendor. Among those vendors would include: the master food purveyor, laundry, website provider, on-line travel agents, beverage purveyors, revenue management system, PMS and POS
providers. Deal with alumni who want to promote their products to be used at The Statler and in some cases beta test them.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIP: Reports directly to the Dean, School of Hotel Administration. Responsible for serving the Cornell Community and for the efficient, effective and profitable operation of the hotel and education center.
PROFESSIONAL/PERSONAL QUALIFICATIONS: Baccalaureate degree in hotel administration or equivalent required. Preference for Cornell Hotel degree. At least ten years of continuous service in hotels of similar complexity with progressive responsibility and varied experience in major departments. At least five years of service as Managing Director/General Manager/Resident. Proven track record of profit improvement while enhancing guest and employee satisfaction required. Dedicated to client service, aggressively market driven, budget-oriented and positive track record in human resources management and labor management relations. Background in marketing and sales preferred. Able and willing to serve, with dispatch and respect, many constituencies with varying involvement. Must be outgoing, poised, articulate, highly visible, flexible and accessible to the constituencies served. Exceptional communication skills are a must in handling the constituents of the school: students, faculty, administrators and trustees. Union experience is a plus. Finally, a focus on driving academic excellence and training is a key success factor.
COMPENSATION: Base salary and incentives will be commensurate with experience.
