SUMMARY: Responsible for the manufacturing for all backlist reprints, frontlist paperback conversions, and all non-book related manufacturing, such as catalogs, brochures, flyers for the Marketing department.
BOOK MANUFACTURING (75%)
Manages the complete manufacturing of 150 backlist reprints annually, amounting to approximately $800,000. Solicits bids, write formal estimates when required; schedules; coordinates corrections (if any); traffics and checks all stages of proofs (if any). Issues purchase orders or orders online, passes invoices and updates databases. Monitors paper inventories and quality control.
Manages the complete production and manufacturing of approximately 75 frontlist paperback editions and 8 frontlist hardcover editions annually, from the receipt of edited manuscript and cover files through the bulk delivery of cartoned books to our warehouse.
Analyzes each frontlist project for manufacturing requirements. Judges the project's needs against vendor strengths and weaknesses and determines optimal partnerships. Continually evaluates vendors for quality of work, adherence to schedules, and cost containment. Researches and negotiates economies wherever feasible. Analyzes art programs and selects the appropriate paper and printing methods to ensure optimum reproduction quality. Evaluates manufacturing costs and analyzes pricing needs for these new titles and uses this information to accurately estimate and create budgets (pricing). Establishes specifications, writes purchase orders and processes invoices, for over $200,000 annually. Prepares final estimates and budgets and delivers books within those budgets. Exercises discretion in a manner that quickly resolves disputes between venders and the Press.
Responsible for coordinating the interaction of editors, designers, and vendors for each book's marketing and sales requirements. Develops and tracks schedules through all stages of proofs. Monitors quality control throughout the production process, investigating and solving problems as needed.
Specific title by title production encompasses diagnosing the art program (specifying the scanning of art and /or any redrawing and re-labeling of digital art), establishing complete manufacturing and component printing specifications; maintaining and updating all pertinent files and databases.
SALES AND MARKETING MANUFACTURING (20%)
Researches and analyzes vendors who handle these types of printing, as they differ from the stable of vendors used for books. Negotiates prices when available. Prepares spreadsheets of each project's cost for Marketing to view when deciding upon the vendor.
Oversees schedules for all projects, such as two Seasonal Announcement catalogs, brochures, flyers, foreign rights guides and advice on what project specs are feasible (paper, page counts, inks, lamination).
Specific project by project manufacturing encompasses the preparation of relevant estimates so Marketing can choose final vendor based on their departmental budget; release of print-ready PDFs and purchase order to vendor; establishing the complete set of print specifications; maintaining and updating all pertinent databases; quality control of products; tracking schedules through estimates to proofing to delivery of products to invoicing; paying invoices; uploading print-ready assets to the R drive for the Archivist to incorporate into the DAM.
OTHER DUTIES (5%) Manages special projects assigned by the Assistant Director of Production to further mission of the department.

Union: 00 - Non Union, Exempt or Temporary
College degree plus a minimum of five years' experience in book production required.
Must have a solid working knowledge of desktop typesetting applications, conventional and electronic prepress, book and component printing, book papers, all bookbinding methods, and publishing procedures.
Demonstrated computer skills in word processing, spreadsheets, and relational databases. Strong organizational skills required. Negotiation and communications skills are essential to this position. A demonstrated ability to work with a wide variety of people, vendors and projects simultaneously, often under pressure, and within budgetary constraints.
