As part of MSU Extension and the Health and Nutrition Institute, this position provides leadership and educational programming expertise in community behavioral topics such as substance use disorder (SUD) and mental health. The position will be expected to conduct research related to the intersection of community and behavioral health, and to advance the interdisciplinary focus of the Institute. The position is responsible for providing leadership for Extension staff engaged in community behavioral health programming, with the goal of providing programming responsive to mental health and substance use needs across Michigan communities. This position will apply for funding for research and Extension programs; publish in peer-reviewed journals; seek collaborations with other MSU faculty and staff; build and maintain partnerships with local, state, and/or federal stakeholders; and, contribute to service as an Extension Specialist in the Health and Nutrition Institute. The position will be based from the campus of Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan.
Develop, conduct and evaluate innovative educational programs that meet current and projected needs for community behavioral health (i.e., substance use disorder, suicide prevention, mental health promotion).
Design, implement and evaluate evidence-based community health programs.
Communicate and interact with university researchers and community groups to assess the needs of clientele and communities and develop effective programming and outreach.
Collaborate with MSU Extension staff to conduct and evaluate programming efforts.
In concert with the MSU Extension work team(s), work with federal, state and county agencies to complete needs assessment of the community and develop effective programming.
Seek and secure funding opportunities, including grant writing, submission and implementation of grant proposals, managing and administering external grants, and through service contracts with external partners.
Train, mentor, and evaluate staff to ensure the requirements and objectives of their outreach efforts, including the appropriate use of grant funds, are met.
Assist and equip local agency staff, clientele, and partners to participate in community-based health research.
Develop and utilize appropriate media methods to communicate current and timely information, research results, and relevant industry updates, as well as create a schedule of current and future activities.
Create and promote positive public relations for MSU Extension and the Health and Nutrition Institute.
Author, produce and submit regular research-based educational articles and products.
Serve as an information resource to clientele, partners and Extension staff and that includes staying current in research for programming area.
Actively participate in professional development opportunities, including developing and following a personal plan for professional development, consistent with personal and organizational goals, participate in organizational meetings and other program activities, as appropriate and needed.
Gather and report programming outputs and impacts, to demonstrate program effectiveness and to guide future program priorities for MSU Extension and the Health and Nutrition Institute.
Work to ensure that community needs assessments, program development, and recruitment efforts include the engagement of Michigan’s diverse residents across race, gender, socioeconomic class, disabilities and other characteristics.
Understand and implement Civil Rights policies and procedures.

Doctorate -Public Health, Health Science, Social Wo
Doctoral degree from an accredited institution in a field of study related to public health, health science, social work, counseling, nursing or a related health field of study, by date of hire.
3-years’ experience or demonstrated ability and skill in educational program planning, delivery, implementation and evaluation (relevant experience acquired within the last 5-years preferred).
Demonstrated ability and skill in educational or outreach program planning, implementation and evaluation.
Demonstrated ability and skill in securing and/or managing grant funds and resources.
Ability to create and carryout a project plan from research of initial concept to project completion and follow-up.
Experience with marketing and promotion of educational programs.
Strong interpersonal, oral and written communication skills, including strong organizational and time management skills to establish goals and priorities, oversee multiple projects, achieve goals and meet critical deadlines.
Demonstrated ability to lead and work productively as a team member, and develop multi-disciplinary collaborations.
Self-motivated with demonstrated ability to work independently in an office environment without daily supervision and/or coaching.
Proficiency in use of technology (e.g. web research, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook for mail/calendaring, distance technology, etc.) for day-to-day work and educational program delivery, record keeping, reporting, team-based communications and overall management.
Demonstrated success in program development and delivery to diverse audiences/ communities including but not limited to race, gender, socioeconomic class, and disabilities.
Proven ability in establishing and working with a diverse network of constituents and community members across race, gender, socioeconomic class, disabilities and other differences to assist with program development and outreach.
Understanding of and ability to implement Civil Rights principles and compliance standards.
Ability to lift and carry educational materials, equipment, etc. up to 25 lbs.
Ability to travel on a regular basis within local and surrounding communities, as well as occasional long distance travel outside the assigned area, in order to perform the duties of this position.
