Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Program Associate II (PA II) for Rutgers Master Gardeners of Atlantic County (RMG-AC). This position reports to the County Agricultural Agent and County Extension Department Head. The Program Associate II provides leadership, coordination and operation of Rutgers Master Gardeners of Atlantic County (RMG-AC) to meet the needs of home horticulture in Atlantic County.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
Trains and coordinates volunteers, supervises educational outreach activities (educational workshops, demonstrations, training programs, volunteer opportunities, media and public relations to reach the community) and responses to consumer questions.
Assists in the implementation of the Rutgers Environmental Stewardship course in collaboration with other RCE faculty.
Completes special projects, either independently or in cooperation with the County Agricultural Agent(s), and other Atlantic County faculty/staff to provide support to RCE-Atlantic community outreach.
Serves as liaison to RMG volunteers in Atlantic County and other RCE advisory committees as necessary.
Works collaboratively with county-based RCE department personnel, community volunteers and organizations.
Participates in appropriate departmental, Rutgers Cooperative Extension, School of Environmental and Biological Sciences, University and County administrative functions, as requested.
Minimum Education and Experience:
Requires a bachelor's degree in education, business/personnel management, horticulture or related field; Or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience that demonstrates knowledge and understanding of coordination, organization, facilitation, report analysis, writing, and promotion/outreach.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
A valid driver's license and two years driving experience is required.
Good communication skills, and computer literacy
Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of educational program development and operation, volunteer management, working with diverse audiences, collaboration/coalition building, and promotion/outreach
Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication, and organizational skills
Effective public speaking, presentation, and demonstration skills
Ability to utilize technology to reach and serve clientele; possess computer and communication technology skills
Must be well-organized and skilled at problem solving
Managerial experience as it relates to volunteer organization
Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse audiences
Demonstrate initiative as a self-starter, and able to perform routine job activities
Computer literacy on Microsoft Office and other Windows software
Knowledge of garden and landscape care.
Two years relevant experience in a program coordination or administrative function
Experience and understanding of Rutgers Master Gardener Program strongly preferred
Experience with volunteer management software strongly preferred (Better Impact™)
Possess initiative, creativity, ability to take direction, and a willingness to learn and improve proficiency
Ability to plan and carry through projects with a minimum of supervision
Desktop and laptop computers, and Microsoft Office suite, e-mail for educational outreach and teaching
Equipment in conducting horticultural related hands-on educational activities may be used for demonstration purposes
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
Position involves carrying educational materials, supplies and equipment to various venues (in and outdoors) and assisting/supervising work of volunteers installing and maintaining demonstration gardens at several sites around the county.
Must have flexibility and ability to work daytime, evenings and weekends, as needed.
May be expected to work outdoors, walk over rough ground, and lift and handle a 40-lb. object.
Vehicle may be provided by the county.
Minor on-the-job travel will be required.
Clean Driving Record
Requires completion of Driver Safety Training/Certification every 3 years.
